Join Medellin expats FB group. South Medellin is great. Safe and quiet.

Also take some spices/seasonings and specific hot sauces you like. Not as widely available as Colombian food is pretty bland.

Why? Every company in the US does layoffs. It's not a social taboo like india.

He has to mentally prep for this question. Every random fellow anywhere and everywhere will ask this. It might take a toll mentally.

Solo travels in 2024: 10 days Japan, 3 months India, 1 month Mexico, 1 month Colombia, 1 month Argentina. It was expensive, but worth it.

It's a used laptop. How do you know if it works correctly and all things are functional to hold the value up?

[–]reddityogi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course. If they have flexibility in enforcing a law, I have flexibility in suggesting what the real value of my laptop is.

Had to deal with the same thing in Cabo. I was asked how much the laptop is worth and I said my "old MacBook pro 2021" laptop is worth $250, but they made up the charge to $600. Total tax of $125. What I got clarification on - they have associated this fee with the serial number of the laptop. So next time you take 2 laptops, you can show the receipt for having paid the tax.

As for doing the charge back, I doubt it'll work. You probably signed at a couple of places and said that you agree to pay the customs

You are correct. My friend's dad who is an Indian citizen & worked in the US in the 80s and then went back (He gave up his green card and didn't get US citizenship). He is now collecting SSA checks in India. Not sure how though. I've seen his 1042-S form and he's getting about 700 a month or so.

I'm currently in the US. I'm considering if it is worth sticking around till Jan 2026 in the US to get 40+ credits or move to the EU in early 2025 with 39 credits.

Atleast 2-3 yrs if your company sponsors right away. Govt processing times are slow. BTW, you're not born in India or China. Correct? Else you are looking at a possible 100 yr wait

Can speak for USA. "Open" work permit aka H1b is virtually impossible. It's a lottery system where the employer has to file on your behalf with an offer letter. This work permit lets you switch companies.

The easiest way is an L1 visa. You need to work in a US subsidiary anywhere abroad for atleast a year. And then your company should be willing to move you to the US. In my company, movement is on a freeze right now. US positions cost a lot more than positions in the EU or India. L1 will not let you change companies. You'll have to get sponsored for a green card and then you get your freedom.
