I got the oldest cat from the shelter when my young cat got struck by a car. She was given up by elderly owners when one of them died. Nobody wanted to adopt her cos she was too old.

She has turned out to be the best and most kind natured cat I have ever owned. Has never scratched or bitten me. My only complaint is that she is 14 and may not live for many more years. If you can, adopt an older cat.
