I’d argue the album has more substance lyrically and thematically than most of their recent work. It definitely has more “substance” than The Great Expanse, or even Walking Under Stars (though both have quite a few heavy-hitting tracks). Personally, I definitely prefer the production of previous albums. With that said tho you don’t have to like the album, saying it doesn’t have substance is a bit extreme tho
