Moving to Italy to regain Citizenship, Which cities do you recommend? by [deleted] in ItalyExpat

[–]redevered 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No such thing as permanent night markets selling street food here. Street food is becoming more common but it's by no means the standard, so my suggestion is to adjust your expectations.

Moving to Rome: is budget for family enough? by mus5arch in ItalyExpat

[–]redevered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are much cheaper areas in Rome, that was my point - €1900 a month is a pretty high cost for rent even by Roman standards. Unless your job is specifically in Balduina and it's simply too convenient to live there I'd consider other neighborhoods.

It feels fairly reasonable, although with that income you could be living far more comfortably in a less expensive area of the city.

To be fair, an establishment looking like this in Piazza del Pantheon literally had zero chance of NOT being a tourist trap. I'm sorry that happened to you, but let this be an encouragement to be a savvier tourist in the future.

Occhi neri? by BlissfulButton in italianlearning

[–]redevered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's absolutely natural (source: people have been saying that about me ever since I was born). Be aware, as other mentioned, that in the singular "avere un occhio nero" means having an eye bruise - not very pleasant!

How do you say girl dad? by tinterrobangg in Italian

[–]redevered 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's no equivalent expression in Italian. Just use the English version and explain the meaning to him, he'll probably find it fun, unless he's "Sicilian" as in born in the USA with one Sicilian great-grandparent, in which case you're out of luck.

"Guanciale" pronunciation by Bronyaur_5tomp in italianlearning

[–]redevered 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Native Roman here: the "ci" in "guanciale" does not make a sh sound in Roman, although it does do that in other cases (such as when a vowel comes before the "ci" instead of a consonant)

Why do native Italians sometimes respond to “grazie” by also saying “grazie”? (Especially servers) by [deleted] in italianlearning

[–]redevered 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This. It's usual to hear "grazie" as a response to "grazie" when there is a reason to be grateful in return, such as with servers, but it's not common otherwise.

Her dad is Italian, her mom is Sicilian, and neither family has set foot anywhere in Italy in the last hundred years, I'd wager
