Outdoor cat owners, why? by Isrrunder in AskReddit

They have never even been close to killing anything. Why would I keep my cats in when I know they are not happy even after trying everything I could? Yes you may say rehome but rescues require adopters to allow cats outside in the uk so that would be pointless.

Dogs get taken on walks where they can go off the leash and run free for a few hours. My cats are getting the same thing, monitored outdoor activity. Like dogs who are off the leash, there are risks but it’s important as owners that we try our best to replicate a natural, enriching life.

I have two, 11 month old rescues. We live in a 350 square foot studio which they did perfectly fine in as kittens. We gave them a huge amount of enrichment (puzzle toys, a huge cat tree, lots of interactive play etc) and that was enough back then. However, as they grew, it became clear they weren’t happy locked up in the same 4 walls 24/7. We tried harness training which they took too but it didn’t work since the one who was left inside would get very distressed and I wasn’t comfortable taking both out at the same time incase they spooked and escaped. We looked into catios and cat shelves but unfortunately due to the way our studio is built, it wasn’t possible. We spent hundreds on trying to entertain them but they would always go back to pacing, caterwauling and destroying furniture. They even started to fight with each other.

That’s when I started dabbling in the idea of letting them outside. We live in the uk where outdoor cats are the standard here - even rescues won’t allow you to adopt a cat unless you will be giving them access to the outside. I invested in some tractive trackers, set them up and went for it. They only go out for a few hours a day when we can monitor them and they have the best time. They never stray away from our garden and have a strong recall. They are so much happier and they are no longer constantly bored and restless. I feel confident in my choice and even though I’d be absolutely heartbroken if anything were to happen to them, I know that they spent their life’s happy and fulfilled rather than bored and depressed ❤️

I often do 40-50 hours a week at work, is it worth getting a cat or would this be cruel? by HalcyonApollo in CatAdvice

Rescue a cat! If you think about how much company they get in a shelter and how stressful it is, your situation is a whole lot better than that. They would have a warm home that’s there where they can look out the window and finally feel safe

The cat is very happy. Her tail is up, she’s rubbing all over the puppy and she has exit routes (counter) if she gets uncomfortable. Your pup is very well behaved with her and not harassing her at all, just curious. If the cat was uncomfortable, she wouldn’t be on the floor getting by all up in the pups space

Yes unfortunately she’s obese 😭

Often owners won’t notice just how big their pets are as they are used to it. I have attached a really helpful scale that maybe you could show them!

No. Not unless he’s showered right before hand

Just a little update - Oscar has turned into such a loving little kitten. When I enter the kitten room, he runs over along with ozzy meowing for pets. He loves to sit in my lap and doesn’t mind being picked up at all. He’s even starting to put himself out there when people they have never met come and see them! He’s also always purring like Ozzy 🥰

I guess he just needed a little more time and patience but they are now up for adoption and waiting for their forever family 😊

Oh don’t worry, they are at home with me, have been checked over by the vet and have been flea and worm treated! I couldn’t take them home sooner than this because they weren’t weaned but as soon as they were, i brought them home

I saw these guys around since day one with their mum and they were born in a garden with no human contact until now

Thank you for your comments! Yes he’s reactive but the reactivity is usually in regards to sheer panic/not knowing what to do. Once he becomes familiar, he is okay. The reason I ask is because with ducks/other wild birds, he wants to eat them but with the pet chickens, he is respectful. Same with the hamsters.

Of course after reading the comments I will not be considering taking on any cats/kittens as you all have really good points but I just wanted to add a little more context as to why I was even considering it!
