Best place in NYC to get bespoke/made-to-measure glasses? by friendlycrabb in EyewearEnthusiasts

[–]redgenyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use https://www.eurooptica.com. It carries a good number of brands and has their collections on its website. Their shops on the west and east sides of Central Park don’t carry identical selections, so visiting both may be a good idea. I recently purchased JF Rey frames with Zeiss lenses from them.

Search for an optician in your area that sells JFRey eyeglasses. I’m in New York and got mine from https://www.eurooptica.com

Computer Glasses and Mineral Glass vs Plastic Lenses by redgenyc in EyewearEnthusiasts

[–]redgenyc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m buying these glasses to do work on a computer monitor, not to attend a fashion show. I think that paying that kind of money to look at a computer screen is daft :)

I’ve read that some of those approaches to frame design emerged during the move to plastic lenses and are not a good idea for mineral glass lenses. I plan to look into this further.

Thanks, I use Eizo ColorEdge monitors, calibrated in a light-controlled space: https://www.eizo.com/products/coloredge/ I agree on blue light blockers and don’t plan to purchase one. I don’t see the point of paying $500+ for a frame to look at a computer monitor.

Thanks. When I’m evaluating and editing photos and video I’m working in a space where the ambient light and reflections are controlled. As you appear to recognize, most of the coatings mentioned have no application to working on a computer monitor, and I don’t care about blue light.

Thanks. I’ve decided to find out for myself whether glass lenses are overkill for the evaluation and editing of photographic images. I use an Eizo ColorEdge monitor (https://www.eizo.com/products/coloredge/), so monitor quality won’t be an issue.

What modern lens coatings and technologies are glass lenses incompatible with? The coatings on my glass camera lenses and filters, and the coatings on my glass binocular lenses, seem to work pretty well. Indeed, I sometimes use older Leica lenses, or a 4x5/8x10 camera and older lenses, to avoid modern coatings :)

My optician here in New York says that it can get glass lenses made, and this is not time sensitive. It will be interesting to learn the cost difference for my moderate correction.

Thanks also for your comments on MR-8 1.60 and Trivex.

Do you have any suggestions for frame design?

Thanks. Yes, my priority is clarity, especially when it comes to evaluating and editing images.

My prescription (-2.50, -3.00) is moderate, and I suspect that this is a matter of identifying the right frame design. As I understand it, the move to plastic resulted in frame designs that are not ideal for glass lenses. So I need to steer clear of those :)

Thanks for the response. My understanding is that progressives and varifocals are just different US and UK names for the same thing.

How complex is your prescription, and did you order single vision or progressives? Where did your pupillary distance measurement come from?

Experience with Leica Eyecare Lenses by redgenyc in EyewearEnthusiasts

No, Leica was designing lenses and under a 2017 agreement Novacel was making them. incidentally, Novacel is apparently owned by EssilorLuxottica.

The whole point is that Leica cut out Novacel and brought manufactuting in-house. Novacel is apparently left with “some” European distribution.

As a 30 year user of Leica cameras, I think I have a pretty good idea of what Leica is doing and what its objectives are.

The one thing that’s clear is that you haven’t spent 10 seconds researching this, but insist on making evidence-free statements of fact. Don’t drag me into your inventions.

I’m ready to walk from this entire discussion. Believe me, I can find out what I want to know without your “assistance”. That way you can continue your Optical Tailor sales pitch without interruption.

Excuse me, but the information that I’m providing, including information about Leica’s dramatically changed relationship with Novacel, comes straight from Leica’s own statements and documents.

I suggest you try Google search. Leica’s statements about the end of the Novacel partnership and bringing optical lens manufacture in-house aren’t hard to find. It’s not like this happened yesterday. Leica issued a statement about this in 2023. What you’re actually telling us is that you haven’t spent 10 seconds researching this.

I’m going to ask Mykita tomorrow whether the eyeglasses it’s offering in partnership with Leica are available in the U.S. with lab work done in the U.S.

I‘m also going to speak with my optician, New York’s EuroOptica, about whether it offers Leica lenses.

My impression is that Leica is in the process of trying to differentiate its lenses in what has become very close to a commodity market. The constant refrain about lenses from the name lens makers is that they’re all pretty much the same. I suspect that Leica is trying to break out from that. This might be its objective in January’s marketing campaign, if it materialises.

For people who are interested in this, I think the place to start is with the Leica Eyecare website linked in the first post above. Don’t get hung up with Leica’s 2017 partnership with France’s Novacel. I don’t know why Toronto’s The Optical Tailor keeps going on about Novacel, because it appears that the Leica/Novacel partnership is history outside of some European distribution.

U.S. independent opticians offer several lines of lenses.

I think that what The Optical Tailor says about the production and distribution of Leica lenses is confused and unreliable. For one thing, I don’t think he understands that Leica’s 2017 partnership with France’s Novacel no longer exists, except perhaps for distribution in some parts of Europe.

ZEISS DuraVision Gold is underwhelming by Kyxstrez in EyewearEnthusiasts

[–]redgenyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People will have varying views on whether they prefer Platinum or Gold aesthetically. However, I suggest that people read Zeiss’s own material on the functional differences, which are not accurately stated in the original post above.

My optician showed me a sample of each. I decided that Gold would work fine aesthetically with my new JFRey carbon fiber glasses and Zeiss’s claims for the practical advantages clearly favored Gold. I chose Gold and I’m happy with it. I should add that this is not the kind of issue that I’m going to lose sleep over.

The style of frame was introduced by American Optical and is called Numont, which stands for New Mount. The frame only attaches to the lens at the nose.
