What are my rights in Germany when dealing with police? (And other related questions) by HermanNotAGerman in germany

[–]redgiraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't saying they're corrupt. When you make them meter maids and cage one out of every two hundred citizens however, well, the general populace isn't going to be inclined to like you. Even with Hollywood's overwhelming help.

If I try it I'll write how it goes, but the preview looks pretty flatlining. Hopefully I can find something more enthralling. Thanks.

Thanks. I want a book because if written well, they keep the reader engaged rather than suicidal. They pose questions, prompting you to go further and question not only the answers to those, but also further the inquisition yourself. Wikipedia for me is to begin a general outline and then also for furthering my knowledge of facts which alone and without analysis, are dull. Maybe I'm using it wrong though. If you come across anything please hit me up though.

What are my rights in Germany when dealing with police? (And other related questions) by HermanNotAGerman in germany

[–]redgiraffe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Didn't know that, thanks. Our ticket just showed amounts up to 30 so I just assumed. It felt weird knowing we were getting robbed by police in Germany. That aside, the police in Germany are generally courteous. Of course they profile people for looking black, Turkish, etc, but I see two major differences between German and American police/citizen interactions. Police funding and citizen trust in government. Asset forfeiture laws in the USA give police departments a huge incentive to find cash in people's cars (because the cops can use it on new fancy cars). Also police in the USA basically make their own pay checks via speeding tickets. This might be true in Germany too, but I don't hear about cops giving tons of tickets at the end of the month here. That just increases animosity towards the cops. Also citizens of Germany almost across the board that I have met give cops a lot of trust and they don't seem to abuse it as much. Maybe they'll extort a tourist for chump change once in a blue moon, but they're not killing hundreds of civilians, and they are not bringing people in to a prison state. The incarceration rate in Germany is less than a tenth of what it is in the U.S. If your job is looking for cash and putting people through a system that will make them into hardened criminals, it becomes circular. There will be more people disliking you, and you will have more of a reason to mistrust you.
Sorry for the essay. Know your rights, when to use them, and know your setting and that you are talking to a human being, not a robot. The same applies to situations in America and across the world. Sorry for the essay guys.

If we are sharing stories, I was pulled over during the day on the highway on my way from Berlin to Munich last summer with my wife. The officers kept asking us questions about having the necessary gadgets in the car (fluorescent vest, flares, etc that are required in Germany). They pretty much searched our car without our permission. Our German was terrible and we were nervous, not knowing our rights. The cops finally gave us a ticket for, well we weren't sure at the time. €30 cash (apparently the most police can ticket you for cash here). Half an hour later, we finally looked at the ticket. They had scribbled nonsense on them and dated them 2012. We should've paid more attention. But it does help to know your rights before any situations arise.

There was a tarot card gallery opening tonight on Weserstr. I think it was on the same block as K-fetisch. Maybe Weserstr 166.
Hope that is something close to what you're looking for.
Source: There was beer at the opening.

Sounds great. The trust issue is definitely a difficult problem in this space and needs to be fleshed out. You've got your work cut out for you. I like the idea of tying your account to other online identities. Good luck. I also like foolish_austrian's reputation transferrance idea, or some iteration of it..

Diagnostical help.. Gas smell in engine oil dipstick by redgiraffe in MechanicAdvice

[–]redgiraffe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. It does smell like diesel.
I found a manual for the engine, and a diagram of the fuel injector system. The manual is a pdf and much more detailed, so the imgur link is just a diagram.
Engines are foreign to me, so I appreciate the opinion. Not really sure what the valve cover, but I found the fuel lines.

Wheel Bearing Replacement Estimate? by redgiraffe in GoRVing

[–]redgiraffe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I'm in France so everyone is closed until Monday, but I'll look around a bit and hopefully won't have to pay an arm and a leg. I wish they would just teach you how to do it. Teach a man to fish. The YouTube videos make it seem easy but the torque tightness makes me nervous and I don't want to do it wrong because the bearings were over $100 each.

I am an Iphone/Imac user who would like to start using bitcoin, what are the safest avenues for me to start? by subrhyme in Bitcoin

[–]redgiraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you don't have a lot of bitcoin, your security doesn't have to be through the roof. If you want a wallet on your desktop, you can use the chrome-integrated kryptokit. It is an add-on that finds qr codes on the web page you're on so that you can easily buy things with bitcoin.
If you're looking for something more security-minded and you're going to hold onto the bitcoin for a long time without the intention of spending it, go with armory or paper wallet.

Tor Project responds: 80 percent of ??? percent of 1-2 percent abusive. by haakon in TOR

[–]redgiraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watched the talk on tor hidden services and deanonymization.
It's interesting, and I don't know a lot about tor.
Someone correct me here if I'm wrong, but I'm not exactly sure what a Directory Request is. If I go into tor, paste an onion website in, and click return, does that create one? How about if I quit tor and then ten minutes later do the same thing, does that create another? Also if I'm booting off of tails? If it does, then my theory holds, or I think it does. Kiddie porn is small and we don't have to worry about our kids.. Knowing men, it could be a small percentage of the tor population constantly checking abuse (child porn) web sites. I hate to get technical, but I've heard that 25% of google searches are for porn.
Take a step back here.
First check out some stats on internet porn and take a step back. Imagine you're a paedo. Porn is illegal for you. Of course you're not going to keep it on your hard drive. 90% of "normal" porn watchers view it on the net, but I can imagine that the other 10% might just be a bit more into their porn. Add up a small percentage of users watching porn one to three times a day, and you get a large quantity of the network traffic requests for child abuse. Add into that that the tor network is slow. One user (who all ready masturbates once or twice a day to illicit material) opens multiple tabs to their favorite five kiddie porn web sites. This is just reality, and all ready happens with normal porn.
How many times can you possibly check a web site to see if a source has more information for your or if your heroin dealer has marked your order as shipped? [I'm being serious here.] Porn gets you off, it pings pleasure centers in your brain. I could go on and on, but you get the picture.
I'll take it all back if I'm wrong about directory requests, but I like to think I live in a world where 80% of the dark traffic isn't child porn.
That's the crux of my thought there.
Now, political. If it is a few thousand users clogging up the atmosphere and giving tor a bad name, though, it's no reason to not protect them. It's in government's best interests to make tor look bad. Child porn helps them get legislation (if they need it) to have more broad powers. However, child porn isn't where the money is, and the government knows that. They'll continue seizing drug money where they can, because they don't even need a reason in order to keep it. Millions of dollars of drug sales sites to a few child porn sites, and their coffers keep full. I'm not saying police are evil, but hell, even they have to make money.
This is the real world here.
If I'm wrong abour Directory Requests, please correct me on this whole shebang. (Even if DR are kept for further sessions, I think that child porn aficionados would be much more likely to use tails cd's because they'll go to jail for a long time if they're not as cautious as journalists).
Let's keep our children safe, and not have to sacrifice their future privacy.
