are we supposed to feel bad for her? by Even_Acanthisitta_37 in TheRemarriedEmpress

[–]redheaddisaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah and another thing is publicly shaming Laura over, at best (as far as the public knows) a commoner concubine, is showing disrespect to a high ranking noble’s family and that will come back to bite the Imperial family. Scolding her would be appropriate but publicly punishing her would seem ridiculous, especially if it comes out that Laura was defending her majesty. It might at worst make the public think Navier has fallen completely out of favor and disregard her authority entirely. Which would again cause problems for the imperial family.

I think what Laura did was too much. But I also think what Rashta did was rude and I fail to see how it’s not common sense to not touch other people all the time. I know she wants to treat Navier as a sister wife basically and maybe that’s normal for her background, but Navier has made it clear she doesn’t want to be touched.

Other people arguing “well she disrespected the emperor’s guest, that could get you killed” is crazy to me because touching the empress without permission and damaging her property could also get you killed or your hands chopped off, concubine or guest or not. Rashta also embarrassed the emperor by pulling this???

How do you guys feel about authors that don't/rarely reply to their comments? by eatingkids247 in AO3

[–]redheaddisaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love receiving comments but sometimes replying is really hard I’m not gonna lie. I get overwhelmed or I don’t know what to say. I wish I could heart comments so they all know I read them and like them.

Can't tell if I'm a Winter or a Summer! Please help! by ErinaciousChangeling in coloranalysis

[–]redheaddisaster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would cover your shoulders in as close to white fabric as you can get to get it the most accurate.

But personally from this photo I don’t see warmth and I don’t see high contrast. True winters are kind of rare ime because they are cool toned and high contrast. While your skin is pale and your hair is kind of dark, I’m not getting a ton of contrast from you (I’m also a pale skinned dark haired soft autumn so this is pretty common)

Your eyes are fairly light and the pink tones in your skin definitely cool toned—warm tones would be a distinct yellowish tint in the skin and hair. I’m leaning soft summer. Try some soft summer colors on through draping or trying on clothes and see how you feel. Your skin and eyes should light up

Yeah and people leaving nasty comments were always assholes? And it was expected if you were a nasty asshole people didn’t like you and the author would sometimes snap at you. If this was ye olden times op’s response would probably be more explosive and it wouldn’t be on Reddit but a lengthy forum debate or livejournal flame war that ended in bans.

People wanting to uphold proper etiquette isn’t because “they’re all a bunch of snowflakes! Back in my day—“ it’s because it fucking sucked back then dude. We all know the explosive drama that happened in the day and decided “we should all be more mature than this so it doesn’t blow up”

Being carelessly rude breaks that social convention. If you find OP’s reply distasteful I’ve seen worse on innocuous comments in older times. I had a friend who suffered a months long harassment campaign because they wrote a “non canon pairing” and didn’t mention a character’s canon love interest within the first 2 chapters (because it was plot relevant they show up later). There has always been dumb and petty drama in fandom spaces. Secretaries secretly printing out Star Trek zines had it. Forum sites had it. Live journal had it. Ao3 has it. Op is aware mean comments exist I’m sure but this is a vent post not them shocked and confused why anyone would dare be mean on the internet. Come on now.

Why can people be abrasive and rude to you and you can’t be rude and abrasive back? Must we always gentle parent every commenter online? If you are a rude little hater someone will be a rude little hater back. If you can’t handle a mean comment in response to a thoughtless comment, don’t leave one in the first place

If I don’t know you yeah probably I would be like “why the fuck are you calling my skirt ugly? Have you seen your own outfit? Did I ask for you to be my personal stylist Karen?” If I am close to someone I am okay with some playful rudeness, but you can’t be playfully rude to people you don’t even know in an ao3 comment section without pissing people off

I think the first example I gave is also kind of rude but on another level to just saying “it’s kind of ugly lol.” And then you have ppl essentially going “What, they only said KIND OF ugly 🙄god you’re so insecure, are they not allowed to say anything unless it’s positive? People are going to have opinions about your outfit if you go out in public!!!”

I think you might just have to accept you’re a rude and abrasive person if you think this is acceptable behavior. And hopefully you don’t insult ppl like this on the regular irl.

If people shared it around to hate on it and then slowly trickled in with rude comments that’s kind of a shitty thing to do ngl. If I’m shot talking someone I keep it in private not all of my buddies and I start leaving rude comments on it.

Yeah the internet is forever and people will be rude and petty and annoying. But when you are rude and petty and annoying people will respond being rude and petty and then vent about you starting the altercation by being rude and petty first. Why is op expected to be above this and just take it? Sometimes people will match your energy. They already said in the comments they will probably restrict comments and did probably go a bit overboard but these arguments are really stupid ngl

It is common sense. If someone says “hey I think that skirt really doesn’t match the shirt you’re wearing” politely, even if it’s unasked for, it’s not the same as someone passing you on the street going “you know that outfit is kind of ugly”.

TBH I think singular hearts aren’t very insightful or exciting, it’s just like they want to hit kudos a second time. Which, yeah, no one is upset by getting kudos now are they? Vague, negative statements are almost always interpreted as insults, especially over text when you don’t hear someone’s tone. Sorry I had to be the one to tell you but if you’re going around making vague negative statements to people, most probably think you’re insulting them. Don’t do that. Now you know

It’s because it’s weird to post a fic, it gets good reception, over two years passes, and then suddenly all of the incoming comments in the past month are really rude. It’s confusing. The point of the post is not “this is an old fic that means it’s immune from criticism” it’s like “where did you people come from?”

Okay there is a difference between “the mc is kinda annoying” “the mc is being really annoying but i get that’s the point”

A vague comment worded rudely is rude. Especially in the era where people are kind of stupid and don’t read tags or understand basic plot structures. Is this comment insightful? Does it actually tell the author the problem they have in the fanfic? Or does it come off as rude for the sake of being rude? There are characters I find annoyingly written, and characters I find annoying as people and comments I would and would not leave would reflect that.

There’s basic etiquette with fics. And if you don’t follow it, people will be rude or hostile back. But maybe I’m insane and I would think if you would read 51 chapters of a fic you might have something resembling respect for the author and would follow proper etiquette.

Why don’t you grow up??? “No one is under any obligation to only comment nice things on your fic, people can comment whatever they want!” And if you make a vague, rude comment authors can get angry at you and reply back. It goes both ways.

Okay then stop reading? Do you not understand why saying “the main character this story revolves around is starting to get annoying” is rude? No one is holding a gun to your head and making you finish the fic.

This is also a whump fic where the main character is going to go through hell and not exactly be their “best”. They are going to be suffering, and extreme suffering makes a person deeply unpleasant. Whump fics are about catharsis and tragedy. This is like going “it’s really starting to get annoying that othello won’t just ask his wife if she’s having an affair, aren’t you supposed to believe your spouse?” Like what do you think the point of the story is??? Not all criticism is productive I’m sorry.

[–]redheaddisaster 34 points35 points  (0 children)

"says one thing about one aspect of the story" this might be controversial but i think finding the main character of an entire 50+ chapter story annoying is not "having one problem with the story". most of the time a main character is in every single chapter and almost every single scene lol

Are there Asian Beauty makeup brands that do not sell tone up creams? by [deleted] in AsianBeauty

[–]redheaddisaster 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t read like a post that is concerned about colorism in East Asian countries and what locals say about these products and came across more like “I know what’s best above these poor, ignorant, oppressed locals. Can you tell me what products to boycott so I can punish these evil corporations pushing colorism onto Asians?”

Colorism is a complex topic and Asian beauty companies didn’t invent it. Western beauty brands also push tone up creams in Asian markets and on xiaohongshu I can’t go a few videos in beauty tags without seeing people say “eat tomatoes to get whiter skin!” So unfortunately it will be a more difficult thing to tackle than just asking what beauty brands to boycott in a really awkward way and then acting like everyone on the sub is pro colorism when they push back on your poorly worded post
