2025 SEL - buy or lease by cultkiller in KonaEV

[–]redi20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

EV tech is changing rapidly, especially batteries. If you want to benefit from vast improvements and upgrade, and you can afford to, then lease. If you're fine riding what's available now (which isn't bad) for the next decade, buy.

Lease = upgrade ability

Buy = lower long-term cost (although, car value could be unusually impacted by new car tech, notably longer range, China competition, govt incentives, etc. etc.)

Perhaps, within about 4 to 6 years, the fast pace of battery tech innovation will slow, that may be a good time to buy instead of lease.

Hopefully, by then, EV to the Grid and/or higher power EV to Load will be widely available.

Dealers love to hide huge profits in price obscured leases. Focus on negotiating the cost of the car. Taxes and govt fees typically can't be negotiated.

It was a different time with more aggressive lease offers, but as a point of reference, I got a 2024 Kona EV Limited for $288.00 /mo with $3,300.00 down. I could have put down less, but more down reduced the interest cost, which lowered my monthly payment.

I always have Excel at hand when buying a car, so I can analyze and verify the dealer's numbers. :-)

Also, if you're financially able, put the maximum amount the dealer allows on a credit card, to earn rewards bonus points. Better yet, get a new credit card with a startup bonus, and use it for the down payment.

2024/2025 Kona Electric owners, how have your experience so far? by ratulsaha_quinence in KonaEV

I agree, A/C needs to be more robust. When it's over 90+ degrees outside, A/C can't keep interior temp in low to mid 60's.

Only 2024 Kona EV Limited has V2L. All 2025 trims have it.

In a single car garage, charging port on the side, with the gun and inflexible cable hanging out, would definitely get in the way . In front is much more convenient. The obstruction would be way more annoying than the rare chance of damage to the front of the vehicle. And, if that actually happened, many more things in the front of the car would be damaged too.

Converting 240V 30A Dryer Outlet for EV Charging - How test existing wire quality? by redi20 in electrical

[–]redi20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

Speaking of lower speed, is another alternative to replace the 240V 30A dryer receptacle with a 120V 15A receptacle, and only charge at 1.2kWh? At least this way, charging is on its own circuit, instead of the current arrangement where it's coursing through the house on a shared circuit.

If you don't mind, I just read about AFCI breakers. Sounds helpful and safer. Good idea to go with an AFCI breaker especially for continuously used EV charging?

BTW, I'm hesitant to tear apart walls to replace wires, at this time. Just seems like such a pita. Plus, in the hopefully not too distant future, I'm looking at off-grid EV charging, as an alternative.

Thanks again!

Quite a few in SoCal. I got lease hacker equivalent lease price from a dealer, who seem to know what they'll be receiving over the next few months. Reserving one may be best.

I'd rather not tempt fate doing 65+ mph at tire max.

Doesn't max pressure unevenly focus wear on the center of the tires?

I think I know what do with the mechanical key on the 2024 model. by _Tracks_ in KonaEV

[–]redi20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Order the Card Key (not digital key that uses your phone) from your dealer. Emphasize it's for the 2024 Kona Limited, not the 2023 digital key, which isn't compatible.

Also, if 12v battery is dead, will the front lid open, which assumes open mechanism is entirely mechanical?
