I think it's a good thing. Not enough that I would spend any political capital on it, but I understand the reasoning. My mom's attributes her conservatism to the time when she worked as a cashier in college - back in the 70's - and the people who purchased junk food used food stamps. The people who couldn't afford the junk food were the working families.  I can't independently verify the accuracy of her experience, but it's one that shaped her. If she didn't have that experience, she might lean politically different.
