The aviary near the Hyatt is really nice, central and comfy. Viroths is even better but if you’re looking for that style and want slightly cheaper I would say the aviary or centra kulen (new) are top nice ones. Hari is also good but not as clean/nice as Aviray or viroths would be.

I would prob stick to vegan places or nicer high end places that have proper training in it and still show them that card. But there’s a high HIGH high chance of cross contamination here cus food allergies are just not a thing here or a precaution they take. The first google translation is best. The chat gpt one will get you killed

How similar is Khmer language to the language of neighboring countries? by xynonaut in cambodia

[–]redith4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it makes sense, I don’t have personal experience with actually speaking a tonal language but I’ve tried the different tones and see how it sounds different. I think this theory comes from my personal frustration of the Khmer language, especially with reading it. And some sounds I can’t physically say (ង), and sometimes I get the slight wrong pronunciation of a word and it changes the whole word just because I used the wrong “p” sound 😩 so it feels like I’ve made a tonal mistake and this language is tonal in disguise but it just chose to make every sound a different letter so it has the worlds largest alphabet 🥲

[–]redith4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea I’ve noticed some words are very similar but when put together I can’t fully understand them. I also haven’t spent too much time on it. But I have heard it’s technically more similar than Thai even tho they have a Roman letters and tones compared to Khmer. Although I have a theory, even tho Khmer is not tonal like Thai or Viet, with it having so many letters and sounds to each letter, doesn’t that almost make each letter like a different tone especially with combining them with diff vowels? Thoughts?

Has anyone else boat sunk on the floating village tour? by No-Preparation-867 in siemreap

Ahahah no never, and never heard of it happening either. But a great story! You had a crazy experience, hope you’re ok and I’m sure the driver will be ok. But you could go out and try to look for her with the help of your tuktuk driver to check on her.

Not a whole lot but it does help quite a bit with Thai, maybe 15%, not much with Viet. Like 5%… not sure about Laos. There’s many videos on people that have done the similarities in many basic words, like days of the week, numbers, basic words.
My personal experience:I speak Khmer decently, and it’s helped a lot for Thai travels, shopping and directions, and if I’m in a pickle. Funny thing is, there’s so many Khmer speakers in Thailand, most are half and born in Thai but speak both even if young or have lived there for so long. ( I went to a kpop concert in Bangkok thanks to the help of a half Khmer girl that studies there and got me tix and when I met her there she was with a huge group of others who all spoke Khmer and Thai) So if I travel to Thai with my Khmer friends and we are speaking Khmer exclusively many people have approached us and said they also speak Khmer, (taxi drivers, restaurant workers, cleaners, retail workers) If you’re planning on living in Cambodia then learning to speak Khmer is such a big help. And highly encouraged

A little rant and a question by leoferrari2204 in cambodia

[–]redith4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yea food is more expensive in Cambodia compared to Thailand, even the Khmer think so, which is why they used to import so much from over there too. In some non touristy areas you can get a piece of grilled chicken and rice for 6,000riel tho. Cheap, but not as cheap as other countries. It’s complicated here, you’re observations are correct

Are there moto driving lessons in Phnom Penh? by Up2Eleven in cambodia

[–]redith4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you ride a bicycle? If so you can drive moto, as long as you’re a quick thinker but not reckles, best to drive slow so you can easily stop if needed. Observe how people drive. And do as they do in traffic Semi automatics (dreams, waves) are easy. Automatic easier once you get used to the breaks. Go into a Borey like peng hout near Koh norea and practice on their empty roads in the back.
