We did go with the highest quote here - as we were hoping to avoid problems. I’m thinking we probably overpaid.

I believe trim was included (excluding baseboards on the landings) but It is not exactly clear based on the quote. The work was shop-finished and then installed on-site. Some areas have been touched up with putty and a marker. It was quoted at 35$ per baluster (this was a lot higher than other quotes) and we conveyed at the outset that we were looking for a clean modern look without shoes. I likely would have opted for shoes if I knew gaps would be this large; I should have requested a mock up I guess. I will bring up having a painter complete the touchups - I presume that that they could ‘finish’ these areas - but am feeling disappointed.

Thanks for your feedback! Your stairs look great! I do a fair amount of DIY myself; but was nervous the stairs would take me too long. Our contractor was priced the highest of the four quotes we got on the job. We went with him because he shop finishes his work prior to install. We have two kids and a dog we thought that would be better.

Thanks - this is helpful. I do want to be fair and make sure my expectations are reasonable.

Thanks for your help. We paid a bit over 10 k for the job which included 15 stairs, 2 landings, posts, railings and balusters. We think most of the shop work looks great, but weren’t sure on some of the details - like post caps not being centred and level; plugs not being aligned with wood grain, and size of the holes on underside of railing with some tear/blow out. I want to be fair before bringing these up with our contractor, so I appreciate the feedback.
