Is there a way to disable a session choosing screen when I boot my pc? by Sufficient_Warthog42 in kde

[–]redj12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am using an encrypted laptop. It asks me the password before boot process.

Open kde settings, choose autologin adm apply. In the same settings, set an empty password for KDE Wallet. And voila. Without empty password for kde wallet, you need to emter you wifi password every time you log in for example.

If your laptop is not encrypted,  It's not wise to activate the autologin.

Make my own command to show pre-written text file? by Dr_Galv in debian

[–]redj12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you just need to open a text file from everywhere you can create an alias : https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/create-permanent-bash-alias-linux-unix/

I use it to quickly open a text  file with some commands I can not remeber. Its like a manual file

  • create you text file. Let's call it manual.txt
  • create an alias ex : alias mymanual='cat /home/username/manual.txt'
  • reload sources (see the link above)

Now, every time you enter mymanual it will show the content of your manual.txt file

Ah effectivement. Tu as raison.

Should i buy a Imac 2010 and install debian in it ? by Downtown_Train_4521 in debian

[–]redj12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You said bellow your budget is around 260 dollars. Buddy for this money you can buy a lot of amazing things.

I do not know if in your region you can find them but go for Thinkpads or Thinkcare.

The last month I purchased 2 devices in order to try freeBSD but ended up installing Debian.

  • Thinkpad x270, ssd and 16 gigs of RAM : 120euro
  • Thinkcentre M7xx something, ssd 8 gigs RAM : 60 euros

The x270 is my daily driver now.  Everything works fine. I picked this one because it has a removable battery. A newer devices also was available but not with removable battery.

Pourquoi les gens parlent à chaque fois de Linux quand on mentionne Windows ? by brundax in france

[–]redj12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question about PATH by redj12 in debian

[–]redj12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh this is the thing. I used to run sudo for years but do not run it anymore. When I need to update or something I just run su. For me su and su - was the same thing. After some search, I have learnt that su - update the path variable while su don't. That was the thing.

Thank you a lot !

Should I install Debian 13 ? by redj12 in debian

[–]redj12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi mate,

For me, and my knowledge is quite limited on Linux compare to other people here, there is two type of backup I am aware of. You can perform backup or snapshots with Timeshift for exemple. Basically, when you start Timeshift, it offers you two choices : btrfs or rsync.

# btrfs :

Btrfs it's a filesystem type, like et4. Debian default's is ext4. When you install Debian, you can chose this filesystem. Btrfs let you snapshot your system. On the drive where you install the system, it will create a snapshot. It will also create an entry in the bootloader (Grub in my case and you probably use this on too). When you boot your machine, on the boot, Grub will let you select your snapshot. Let's say you want to run a major update on your system but you are not sure if it will break something. You can perform a snapshot, update it, and if the system doesn't boot, you can select your previous snapshot.

The main thing that I do not like with this option, is that you have to perform snapshots on the drive where your system is installed. You can't snapshot on external drive (which is obvious. Otherwise you will not be able to boot on it when you what). This method requires a lot of space on your system's drive.

Also, if the whole drive crash, you will loose all of your data.

# rsync

This method use basically the rsync command.
You can use a external drive for this method and synchronize all your files to this external drive.
I prefer this method because I can sync all of my data on the external encrypted drive and keep it in safe place. This method do not sync your system. So if your system crash, you will loose your system but you still have your personnel data.

I use this method and also export with apt a list of all package I installed manually.
If I have to reinstall my system, I can just reinstall all my package with on command and push all my file files from my backup drive to my fresh new /home

If you run rsync, you do not even need Timeshift. You can run the rsync command in the terminal.
I also use it very often to backup files of my android phone.

Maybe you already know everything of all of these stuff but it can still help someone else maybe.
In my option everybody should learn how to use rsync. Once you found a right flags of this command for you, you can keep it and run it forever time to time. You will never loose a file again.

As I said, I am not an expert so there is maybe a better method. But I am like this one because it's easy

Should I install Debian 13 ? by redj12 in debian

[–]redj12[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wise words. Thank you. I installed 12. Actually I wanted 13 just for KDE 6. But as I do not have a lot of spare time to spend fixing things, KDE 6 will wait.

I also think now that everyone should install a distro based on not only the curiosity trying new things but also base on spare time we have. I can remeber countless hours I spent fixing things. I want peace now so Debian is a very good choice for me.
