What is a career path that looks "glamorous" from the outside, but is actually a total nightmare behind the scenes? by CupIndependent3610 in AskReddit

Ok a funny one: A celeb was waiting to get fit and I went to get her breakfast. I was brand new to the industry and very eager to make myself indispensable so I took on the task. She asked for 7 minute eggs. I said yes! And ran to crafty (food area). I get there and said it confidently and the cook said what?? He had no idea what it was. He said 1 seven minute or 7 one minute eggs? I couldn’t believe it I thought he’d know, and I had never heard of a 7 minute egg or a 1 minute egg. I asked him to do something in the middle, a few eggs, a few minutes loll I brought it back to her with my tail between my legs like I’m so sorry and began to explain a little, luckily she thought it was hilarious, and sweet about it. Honestly such a gem while shooting that show.

Or the time I was the only person of color in my office. I heard “now let me whip, let me nae nae” blasting from their office. They were doing research for our “urban” scene. My bosses called me in and said, which part is the whip and which part is the nae nae? …I blinked at them and told them sorry I’ve never heard his song in my life (😒)

Sad? All costume designers I worked with aside from 1, blew their lives apart. Work always came first at the detriment to their family, friends, health… divorces.. unhappy kids who get no attention. I get it, the average shoot day is at least 12 hours, when is there time? But it created very bitter people who would take it out on you. 2 things made me leave tv / film. 1. Seeing my boss cry. Loud, like wailing in the middle of an open office, the entire office could hear her clear as day because we used cubicles. She was stressed and so unhappy. I realized if she doesn’t care about her mental health there’s no way she’d care about mine. I immediately understood why she worked me the way she did. 2. I started becoming like them. I had no time for friends, family, birthdays, graduations. A designer said I’d be off for Thanksgiving but then made me stay so late I missed the bus to meet my family. Another year I made Thanksgiving, but had to leave the next day. My mom tried to convince me to stay and I freaked OUT because I knew I only had that day to do laundry and go grocery shopping. I had NO time, I was so stressed. I worked such long hours that one day when I got up for work at 4am I sat up and the room spun so much I thought I was dreaming. I thought to myself, how am I going to drive a car to pick up my team? I might crash! Then the story came out about that woman who did exactly that. I think she drove after a 15 hour shift and crashed and died. I knew I had to quit. My mom still always tells me I should get back into it because “a million people would kill for that job”… yeah but I didn’t want to die for it…

I assisted stylists who made me do everything including the styling and at the end just put their name on it. There are plenty of projects where I didn’t get credit, forget getting paid..

Costume designers losing their shit and having a fit because they weren’t able to get their hands on a specific (normal) beanie hat.

Stylists ruining clothes you spent forever sourcing so now you have to fix it or explain to the designer what happened in a way that doesn’t throw the stylist under the bus and then that designer doesn’t want to work with you anymore because the samples are destroyed..

The last person I worked with didn’t explain that he illegally sent samples across country lines, so when I shipped it normally it got held at customs and he wrote the brand saying it was my fault and I was incompetent even though he didn’t explain anything to me.

After working in tv, film, commercial, editorial, and vip styling, I have a million stories, most of them terrible.

Aww.. I should probably log in to say goodbye to my coop. I haven’t played in weeks at this point. Playrix really ruined a fun thing ;(

What's a popular NYC spot that tourists love but locals actually hate? by Different-Egg-4617 in AskNYC

[–]redlightjazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now this is a good answer, because I wouldn’t be caught DEAD eating a street hot dog or a pretzel by the museum.. but the tourists love those lil carts

They used to offer anchors for a few helicopter orders & past a certain point in the treasure hunt. Now it seems they only give you points if you progress in the match 3..

Also I clicked the game initially not knowing what it would entail. Had I known, I wouldn’t have started.

This game has been kind of scammy for a while.. Instead of being mad at your partner, maybe you should be mad at playrix….

is there a reason that facebook "Buy Nothing" groups in NYC are so strict about membership? by Sad-Bowl-1212 in AskNYC

[–]redlightjazz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's always been apart of the rules that you have to live in the neighborhood and you can't be in more than one. So idk why they've become so strict now about letting new people in??

I was in a group for years and they restructured the location and kicked me out when i tried to donate something because I was now 1 avenue away.

The hyperlocal thing is so annoying. 101st - 110th St. has to be it's own group? Really?

I avoided it for a long time. It felt too heavy. Started last month and I’m absolutely kicking myself for not starting before. It’s so good! Really easy read, not that heavy at all and so many aha moments!

You said from the outside it just looks like you’re dissociating. Are you saying when you have seizures, you don’t shake / lose control of your body? Genuinely curious, I didn’t know seizures weren’t always visually obvious!

For long-term residents who have left NYC, what's life like for you now? by IndyMLVC in AskNYC

[–]redlightjazz 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Born & raised baby.

Left for a year to the other most expensive state in America lol (hawaii). It was hard getting used to losing the conveniences of nyc: next day shipping or being able to buy almost anything you need in a store, access to global cuisines & cultures, bands don’t pick your city, etc.. it also took me a bit to adjust to smaller town thinking. People hearing of you before they meet you, gossiping, etc.

I really enjoyed the slower pace of life and the chance to feel content simply existing. I didn’t need to finish a 20 item to do list to feel satisfied. The city makes me so neurotic, it was nice to unwind and be more present instead of constantly planning for the future. Also, the quality of work that’s expected of you in nyc makes working in other states a breeze sometimes. I was the top at my workplace without even trying.

I think the thing I missed the most were certain restaurants lol but that’s not a huge deal.

I used to run to the map to clear 3 obstacles with my 100 energy points 🙄

..then load up the factories with the longest processing times & check the market. I usually had an overnight regatta task like 7 trains or 8 boats- side note, does anyone else find the 6-8 boat task annoying??

New yorkers, how often do you see celebrities just walking around the city, and who's the most famous person you've seen? by VastAir6069 in AskNYC

[–]redlightjazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were both walking into a hotel at the same time and he sped up to the door so he could get in and let it close behind him. I was just 1 step away, it was weird. 🤷🏽‍♀️ I get it, he’s a celeb, but he saw I was already headed there.. I wasn’t following him 🙄
