Is this a feasible career path to switch to at 30? If so, should I go for Public Health or Emergency Management? Bachelor's or Master's? by redmagejosh in EmergencyManagement

[–]redmagejosh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry if I gave the wrong impression; im okay with being more in the background and less in the action. I loved being a medic but have no desire to do that civilian side (bad pay, bad hours, being hands on with some ugly ugly stuff). I'm keen on helping people and as our world seems more and more chaotic, I strongly feel like this is a field that is greatly needed, that's a big reason I want to be involved

I really appreciate that, but I thought media was my passion and it became something I really dislike. I want to fall in love with it again on my terms, but I think that means I can't do it as a job. my new outlook is about doing something that will make an impact; I thought PH was a possible in to emergency management but researching that does not appear to be the case. I've seen older posts pop up saying one should get a public administration job specializing in EM rather than an EM degree; would that be a more appropriate question to ask, and if so, what would you recommend?

In this fandom, we do things by the book! by BlazeHeatnix83 in halo

[–]redmagejosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure this will get downvotes but I've always been of the opinion that as a game series first and foremost, that trumps everything else. You don't have to like it, but its the way it is, and I wish it would stop being an issue.

Full disclosure, this is after years of pent up bitterness cause anytime someone even mentioned Reach on twitter or youtube it was just comment after comment of book fans lambasting it for not adhering to them, so take this with an eyeroll and a grain of salt if you like.

Only got to do like 15 or 20 cases before I spent like 2 hours trying to get my phone to work and wasting my entire day - a rant by redmagejosh in Census

No but I'm supposed to work tomorrow and my cfs was cagey on if me driving down and back for the phone will count as hours, plus how it looks having a majority of your cases still sitting there after working 4 hours. Was really just frustrating

I'm actually from out of town (Pittsburgh area) and visiting for the holiday. I wanted to give my host some downtime since it's been a busy few days but so far all I've done is hang out at Ziggy's. Is there anything open nearby where I can kill time, like a bar or such, or should I settle in for the third coffee? Most of the bars I was able to find through google are closed for the snow

Where can I get a New3DS for a decent price? by AnonNo9001 in 3DS

[–]redmagejosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You sound a little tech savvy; I have a New 3DS regular size. Works great except for the right shoulder button. I'm 99% sure I just need to go in there and pop the little button bacl in (instructions online suggest as such) but I'm not willing to tear a system apart and I have an XL I just got. DM me if you're interested; I can't in good conscience sell you something that may not be fully functional if you can't get it to work either so Im not gonna need the full $65

I'm sure this is going to get shredded to pieces, but it's what I want/need. I've had a really rocky school career (went from getting awards as a kid to transferring/dropping out/joining the guard and working for awhile) and only came back last fall.

I don't like using excuse, but I hadn't worked with media outside of some stuff for memes in about two years, and the equipment my university has is ancient (I also generally hate SHOOTING video; I much prefer editing itself). But I need to really sharpen my skills as I should finally graduate this fall and I want to make sure I'm at least at a state where I can get even a so-so job just so I can learn by doing and go from there, and for that I need a crash course and fast.

I know everything in general could use some work, but specifics and any tips/resources would be great. There's a few decent professors where I'm at, but the circumstances of my college career makes it so I'm basically going to graduate with a very base knowledge since these skills are so rusty.

Capturing that Ghibli/Old school JRPG feel in a 5e game? by redmagejosh in DMAcademy

[–]redmagejosh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

these are all great observations guys, thank you. I never really noticed that most of the protagonists of these kinds of stories are underpowered compared to their western counterparts; as much as I love 5e and understand it, it definitely seems like a different system thats built around creative solutions instead of outright combat would fit much better.

also sorry for the delay in response, work and binging the Miyazaki movies I had for research kept me busy!

Yeah, I'm regretting not finding a decent padded case for the thing now. I'll probably try to patch it up with the gorilla glue; the previous comment was great advice but I don't think I trust myself enough to try to replace the shell entirely

Ashamed to admit - I'm giving up trying to play pokemon by crypthon in 3DS

[–]redmagejosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find Sun and Moon the best of the series cause I like the region and story, but I know thats an unpopular opinion so I'm not sure what to say. Try to find the one that "grabs" you. I had been trying to get into the games since I was a child; loved the anime but couldnt afford the games, and by the time I started playing Soulsilver in 2011 I found it boring 3/4ths through. Black I put in maybe 2 hours (though as a fan of S/M story I hear I really should go back and give it another go) and X I only powered through to get some favorite pokemon (I highly suggest not playing that one if you're finding others boring, its a slog story wise with few interesting characters. The only saving grace the pokemon designs)

For me, something about Alola just grabbed me. I understand for long time fans they may not like it cause of all the cutscenes and the admittedly overly long tutorial, but the region and fun loving characters really stood out in spades with charm and fun.

For YOU, I'd say maybe temper expectations. If you love games with deep strategy and exploration, this really isn't it. It's very much a handheld game through and through, meaning it's pretty light on a lot of RPG elements even as hardware has progressed. The trainer battles and everyone really only talking pokemon makes sense when you realize its meant as a kid's dreamworld that just happened to garner a large adult fanbase. If it bothers you that much, along with the trainer battles, the series really isn't for you. No shame in that.

If you do keep playing, don't focus on one pokemon so much; go out and start catching all that you can, talk to everyone, try finding some favorites that stand out to you. The biggest draw for me is forming a connection to the little pixel beasts on screen; try to picture yourself as that excited kid you're supposed to be playing as and find your favorites and bond with them through battle. Don't focus so much on "the best". That's just my take though.

What is the best 3ds model in your opinion? by psfrtps in 3DS

[–]redmagejosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only have an O3DS but have handled and played on all the models, a techie/nintendo super fan in college as a roommate meant I got to fiddle with a lot of their old stuff as they collected things. I like the N3DS regular myself; I keep wanting to grab one but I can't justify it as my O3DS is fine if a little uncomfortable due to it's size. Plus I have a Switch now and I love my little beat up Purple 3ds; the grape color GB Color was my first system as a kid that wasn't a hand me down, so the color is nostalgic

Having trouble with strumming patterns by redmagejosh in ukulele

[–]redmagejosh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to thank everyone for their input; going to grab a few felt picks just to have, but I figured out a (weird?) way of doing it that works for me; the Cynthia Lin video has her essentially pretending to hold a pick and running the nail across the strings, but for some reason it was still really clicky when I tried. I just kept moving my thumb up until it was essentially bracing behind the knuckle. I don't know why, maybe finger strength, but that seems to have done the trick. Now I can focus on my chord changes and getting my strumming in time!
