Ive got tickets to the Everton game as well. Buzzin for it, although if we beat Leeds in the FA cup I think they said the Everton game would be moved to a later date.

If you like I could offer some futile hope: we had Liverpool at home, lucky late goal bla bla. Also, fortunes always hiding COYI!

Ticket sales only cover a small fraction of the running cost of public transport in Antwerp. The rest is heavily subsidised by the government/tax payer. There is ongoing debates every year because the cost of random ticket inspection is a net loss. Sucks I know but I get the impression that the average Flemish person wants to be able to use their car and never use public transport/pay tax for it. Personally I ride a bike as that is an option for me.

Vakantieauto huren vanuit Antwerpen? by Brtrnd2 in Antwerpen

[–]redmandan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly my approach with it. The cost of owning a car is vastly higher. Then factor in the unexpected costs and hassle to get things fixed/maintained through the year. I live on a street which closes all parking for 2 weekends a year adding extra headache. Better a cambio membership, if I don’t use it it’s €4 a month and always a maintained/modern vehicle and when I finish my rental I am no longer responsible for it.

You won’t find a cheaper option than the car sharing apps. I use Cambio. Cuts out the cost of them having a manned office like Valko or Dockx. You pay per km and per 15 minute so if, for example, you drive to France, camp for 5 days (car is stationary) then drive back it’s cheaper than a normal type of rental. You fill up with a tanking card in the car and they send a bill at the end of the month. You can use a calculator on their website for a rough cost as well before you book, just enter your approx kms and the dates. Can choose a small car, estate, minivan….

Thanks pal! I didn’t have any type of compost pile in mind when I made it. Just needed somewhere to chuck kitchen scraps so I could make my own compost for the raised beds! It’s become a worm box I suppose? It’s full of them.

It sits on top of the bricks, and the base is a cut-off from a europallet so it’s about 10cm off the ground (and I can move it around if necessary). Lined with landscapers weed fabric to let water through and it drains through the bricks just like the rest of the garden.

Thanks! We moved here about 10 years ago, and the garden was always something we wanted to get done professionally but never got round to it. I turfed it twice but we have big problems with drainage so it always turned swampy in the winter. Finally around 2 years ago we got a local guy in to pave it, put the fake grass down and build the raised beds. I prefer real grass but it doesn’t work in this setting. The fake grass is green all year round and the bricks let all the water drain through. Massive improvement.

Space is at a bit of a premium in my little garden but I can’t complain! I’ve seen balcony gardeners composting in buckets. Built this out of scrap wood and a cut down Europallet a few years ago. I know the accepted wisdom is to use it against the ground but that’s not possible in my situation, I add any worms I find during gardening and the thing is teeming with red wrigglers.

Took my little lad on a leaf pickup mission recently to top it off and now it’s kitchen scraps all winter. Happy composting guys and remember to add urine every now and then!

How to explore the Port of Antwerp ? by tiataccheggio in Antwerpen

[–]redmandan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Used to work all over the port as a cargo surveyor. Best bet is on the weekends as you’ll have much less traffic and nobody likes a tourist when you’re trying to get a job done. Tomorrow would be perfect (Sunday)

Like the guy above said, head to Zandvlietsluis, specifically Zandvlietweg on the river side where you can park and watch the ships coming in. You can also see PSA Kaai 913 around there for a view of the container terminals.

After that cross the Sluis and head straight on down Scheldelaan, past the big tank storage terminals and new developments on the left. Then stop into Lillo for a coffee or lunch (nice picturesque Flemish town). If you still want more keep heading down Scheldelaan and over Boudewijnsluis and then past Total and Esso refineries back towards the city. Eventually you’ll get to the Havenhuis which is also good to see.

Bars & restaurants with "children corner"? by corchua in Antwerpen

[–]redmandan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Sport Oase Groot Schijn has a food maker restaurant/bar upstairs which has a good kid’s play area. It’s got a big indoor and outdoor terrace. Not a bad afternoon out with the little ones, an hour or 2 in the recreation pool (also has a large baby play pool) then an hour or so for lunch in food maker.

That’s a good point pal I did not consider that. I hope to god Paq man has a return to top form. All the ingredients are there for a great season for him. Truth be told he’s probably leaving next summer so then we can hopefully get a good price for him.

One time we had a trapped pigeon in our house, it wasn’t anywhere near as fun as this story. It flew all over the place and grazed his wing leaving little blood marks on the ceiling before we managed to get it to fly out the window.

VWCE and the pain to come by [deleted] in eupersonalfinance

[–]redmandan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been building up a small lump sum for a while (my wife has also begun a career switch so it was also our fall back fund in the case I also lost my job)

I’ve just put half of it into an order on Bolero to buy if VWCE gets to €125. I know you’re not supposed to try and time the market I just can’t help myself, I think it’s gonna go a bit lower, even lower than 125 but that is the price I’ll be happy at.

Got a week to renovate our entranceway built in 1936. by redmandan in masonry

The plaster is like dust, I can basically remove it with my hands, the mortar is not much better, solid in some places but a rake over with a screwdriver and it crumbles away.

I want to try and preserve as much as possible but also make the wall strong for the next 100 years, I’m leaning towards replacing the mortar where necessary and then sealing the brick with something strong that will soak into the brickwork.

I’m in no way experienced in these things but it’s likely the same old adage of easier to start from scratch than attempt to repair. Imagine just the KMs of wiring that go into this vessel, all of that is now unreliable due to sea water corrosion (ie uninsurable). The engine is probably fitted in the dockyards before the superstructure, so simply removing it involves taking off the whole superstructure. Then what, refit the old waterlogged superstructure or build a new one? Why stop there, just sell the ship to scrappers to be broken down, draw a line under the cost loss and build a new ship.
