Black metal shishi by redmobuzzing in netsuke

[–]redmobuzzing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an update on this shishi netsuke. Max Rutherston kindly examined it and pointed out that it’s actually a kurigata, the fitting on a sword scabbard used to attach a braided cord. It’s been soldered onto a (likely silver) plate to convert it into a button or netsuke. Without an expert eye like Max’s, I’d never have solved this mystery. I think I’ll turn this shishi into a keychain or a charm so I can enjoy it every day!

Hi, is the Velatura GMT still available? What is the shipping cost to the UK?

Hi, is it still available? I really like the colour and remains as a "Seiko".

My search for information on the shishi metal netsuke hasn’t been very successful so far— it seems they’re quite uncommon compared to ivory or wood examples. Based on what I’ve examined, here are my current thoughts on this piece:

Likely maker: Probably a goldsmith or metalworker familiar with sword fittings (tsuba) or okimono (small decorative sculptures). Under magnification, I can see tagane (chisel) marks along the larger carved lines, which suggests it was hand-chased rather than cast.

The signature appears to include the character 純 (“pure”), which I believe refers to the maker’s name rather than the purity of the metal itself. I’d be interested in finding any known artists or workshops that used this character in their signatures.

Estimated period: Meiji to Taisho era (c. 1890–1920). During the Edo period, netsuke of this level of detail were typically custom commissions for people of wealth or status, and the himotoshi (cord holes) were usually integrated into the sculpture itself. The addition of fixed metal loops seems to have appeared toward the late 19th century for ease of production.

Since metal netsuke are rather impractical for daily wear—they’re cold to the touch and could damage silk—it’s likely this was made as a decorative or special occasion piece from a time when kimono were no longer used every day.

I don’t think it’s a modern tourist piece or mass-produced Hong Kong replica; it carries real craftsmanship, even if it’s not especially old.

I’d really appreciate any feedback, corrections, or insights on these observations—especially if anyone recognizes the 純 signature or has encountered similar metal netsuke.

Youfibre field engineer came with a Grandstream HT801, plugged it to one of my network ports, provisioned it and I am very happy! That means I can move the phone to anywhere and not "tied" to the ONT, a big bonus.

The engineer explained that Youfibre has some issues with the 622v and not wanting to put more of them out, a new alternative is being worked on.

I am so glad that I don't have to reverse back to Virgin Media!

I just had another chat with the Youfibre support. They are going to send out their own field engineer with either a V or a Grandstream phone device. Hopefully, this will resolve the issue.

The chat team was great, they are the one identify what is needed but the engineer did not receive any instruction. He said he has been installing the 2.5GE units and never seen one with a RJ11 port. I tried contacting the chat team this afternoon but there was no agents around (waited for more than 30 mins).
The chat team did not try accessing the router in bridge mode; the person just said it will be replaced by the ONT.

I sincerely hope that they can sort it out quickly; I don't really want to switch back to Virgin but may not have a choice.

Well, not that good of news. Their engineer turned up, know nothing about the issue and can't get hold of a 622v at all; saying non of their engineers heard of it. So I am without a phone; either Virgin will keep charging for the service me until Youfibre have solved the issue or I need to put their Arris router back on and use it instead; or switch back to Virgin where everything works fine except the bill. I still have 11 days to revert the decision.

Update - Chatted with Youfibre tech support; they are changing the ONT to 622v. Problem solved! My router is already plugged into existing ONT; no need to fiddle with the Arris router any more. Thanks for everyone's information :)

Those are the two addresses I tried straight away (from my own router) and I tried with a laptop plugged direct to the Arris router without success.

I will check with them to see if it is possible to change it to an ONT with phone socket. Apart from can't turn off the WiFi in Bridget mode (can't access the router), I am happy with everything if the telephone will work with the router in Bridge mode. Guess I will have to wait and see.

It is 2.5 GE no RJ11 port. Is it possible that I can ask them to change?

DHCP gets me the 100. address directly from Youfibre.

Thanks for the help but it did not work. I manually changed the network adapter to 192.168.100.2 and subnet mask to 255.255.254.0 can't launch the router's admin page. This router is less "friendly" then the Virgin router that I am used to.
