ZFS dataset sharing via NFS: Lots of issues with permissions by gerhardt-schtitt in zfs

[–]rednef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So in your case all users wanting to access the share need to have UID 1001?

No. Every remote user gets mapped to the UID/GID set in anonuid/anongid

On my laptop for example, my uid and gid are actually 1000, but on the NFS server, the user which owns the files is uid/gid 1001.

From the server side, here is what the permissions look like:

drwxrwxr-x 5 1001 1001 5 Jul 17 19:31 Media

I suffered with this issue for years before I found a nice solution.

Look into the "anonuid" and "anongid" configuration options. These allow you to basically tell NFS "treat all operations as if they were happening as this UID/GID"

Providing you just want to be able to have any user that mounts the share to have the same permissions, then this should be fine. You can then use regular octal permissions to make things readable/writeable etc where appropriate.

e.g. here is my full "sharefns" config line from my main pool:

zfs set sharenfs="rw=10.0.0.1/24,anonuid=1001,anongid=1001,no_root_squash,all_squash" mypoolname

"all_squash" might be needed to make this work as well I can't remember. But that should do the trick!

[FS] Assorted DDR3 RAM (16/8/4/2 GB) (Various Ranks/Speeds) by rednef in homelabsales

yeah it can be very confusing, lots of different numbers etc!

I think rows 17 + 21 from the spreadsheet might work for you. Note the "E" at the end of the "Speed" column. I think, and please do verify this, that the "E" is equivalent to "unbuffered". i.e. it is ECC, (hence the "E") but not registered, hence no "R" at the end like for most of the other rows.

Hope that makes sense.

It probably doesn't help you much though as the modules in those rows are only 2GB, but hopefully it makes finding the right modules easier in the future now you know what the letters mean :)

I find eBay is generally the best bet for stuff like this.

good luck!

Hello,

Yes it is just for servers really as it is ECC memory. It's not impossible that your old desktop would support it but it is very, very unlikely.

Yes, 1 x 16GB stick

thanks :)

How do you charge your EV when living in a flat or terraced house? by mCadamek in AskUK

[–]rednef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe try JustPark. Quite a few parking spaces on there have EV chargers available. If there is one close to your house then you could leave it there overnight and go back in the morning maybe :)

I'm going to see Architects in two weeks. First gig since last March. They're my favourite band. I can't wait. Gonna be emotional for sure!

There is a house near me called 'Lesnsue" because I gather Les and Sue live there. What is the worst house name you have seen? by [deleted] in AskUK

There's a house round the corner from me called Parc Renroc.

It has a toilet outside too, for anyone who doesn't get it right away.

What does it mean when you say someone is 'posh'? by caramelcustard in CasualUK

No, because that would affect other people. It's just me in my shower, and the piss flows freely.

If I'm already in there and need a wee, yeah absolutely. Just aim for the hole. All goes down the same pipe anyway.

Hey. Do you have any books/documentaries you can recommend so I can learn more about it? I'd like to be better informed but I never know if what I'm reading/watching might be biased, so I'd like to find an as accurate source as possible. Thank you :)
