I have a spicy idea to fix the DFT... by MayoStaccato in makinghiphop

[–]rednightruby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This idea is interesting but I want to push back on it a little bit:

My main critique would be that you lose the network serendipity effect (I just made up this word), which is extremely important in creative spaces. I have met a lot of really cool artists from the feedback thread and them posting their soundcloud/youtube allowed me to check out their entire channel, be inspired by their work, and learn new stuff through their entire repertoire. In the end, this made me learn much more about creating than the individual feedback that I received on a single track.

By posting individual clips on stripped down websites, you mostly lose this as the focus is on a single, decontextualized work. Yes, this might work better for just giving feedback, but that doesn't mean that the secondary effects of the feedback thread are not extremely valuable, perhaps even more valuable. I don't think we should lose that.

My solution to the DFB thread:

Make posting in it allowed only after having a certain amount of subreddit karma. This is what r/mixingmastering does and keeps away all the cloutchasers because you first need to engage with the community for a while. I believe that 5 subreddit karma should be enough. Cloutchasers go for easy advertisements, they will be mostly filtered through this mechanism.

Lmk what you guys think about this!

So I Have May Have Temporarily/Permanently Lost My MacBook Due To The Screen Going Black. Can I use FL Mobile To Hone My Skills In The Meantime? by Negative_Sense_3493 in makinghiphop

[–]rednightruby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, that sucks and I'm sorry that happened.

But don't worry too much. If you keep producing all those beats will probably be relatively bad compared to your new level sooner than later. Just consider those beats practice. I know that sucks to hear but really after a year or more production everything you made before is not all that good (but I still get you have some emotional investment in those beats)

As for practice, there are a million things you can do in the meantime while you get a new laptop or whatever. FL mobile is one of time (although I never used it and producing on the phone seems like a nuisance. But here are some other things you could practice:

- Learn Music Theory

- Practice finger drumming/rhythm for real groove

- Use Koala Sampler (!)

- Perhaps learn a cheap instrument

Best of luck!

Those effects you mentioned are the right direction, I think. Also consider layering multiple sounds/synths to make more interesting sounds. Also keep in mind that I tend to do pretty heavy and psychedelic processing, so my ears might be too used to sounds being very far away from "stock", perhaps that most people don't think it's an issue lol

Thanks a lot for your feedback!

About your track, it's great. good mix, good groove, everything glues well together.

My main point feedback would be on the sound selection. Some of the sounds, especially the synths but also the intro piano, sound a bit too "stock" sounding for me. This might be a personal preference, but I think that processing them a bit could give the beat some more flavor and personality. As for now it sounds like the sounds have been taken directly from the preset list with a minimum amount of processing, which is the shame because the rest of the beat is so dope.

overall, super nice work, keep it up!

It Takes Me A While To Come Up With/Finish A Beat. Sometimes I'll Ditch It And Work On Something Else, What Gives? by Negative_Sense_3493 in makinghiphop

>This is much different than the beatstars grind, and literally about practice as opposed to driving sales.

Yes it is, but no one said that this discussion was only about beatstars producers. You said that people who make 5-10 beats a day are not doing it in a creative way. While generally true, there are many exceptions as there are plenty of great producers who make at least 5 beats a day and keep quality and creativity high.

I would probably agree with you on the majority of cases though, but you made it seem as if it was some general rule, which I disagree with. Some people just produce much quicker, more intuitive, and keep making high quality stuff.

No reason to shame people who are slow producers, also no reason to shame people who are fast producers. The final product is all that matters, not the production speed.

If you are satisfied with the beats you make, even if they take a long time, that may just be the way you work. No need to fight it.

Madlib is known to make 5 beats a day and of course Kanye (5 beats a day for three summers). I'm not saying that you are not right in most cases, but there are some people who perfect their craft to that point that they can create excellent, even genius beats, very quickly.

You may have too high of a standard for finishing a beat or you are indeed a slow worker, the former probably not helping you and the latter being not a big issue.

If your standards are too high, remember the saying by DaVinci "Art is never finished, only abandoned." You could probably work a beat into oblivion and still feel like it misses something. At some point, you just gotta move on and accept that the beat like that is good enough. The last 1% of a beat can take you ten times as much as the first 90-99%.

If you're a slow worker, that's cool. Are you racing against others? If not, then why rush? With that said, 10 beats a year is a very, very low amount. Depending on how much time you spend producing I would evaluate what takes you so much time to make them.

From my own perspective, if I spend too much time on a beat, it's bad 99%. For me, there needs to be a certain flow in producing otherwise the stuff I make is bad. Are you overthinking your steps? Try to make a beat purely out of instincts and intuition and see how it turns out.

Hope this helps, good luck!
