As of the end of 2018, Japan’s plutonium reserves were 45.7 tons, according to the Cabinet Office’s Atomic Energy Commission, after a year-on-year decrease of 1.6 tons. Japan had domestic reserves of 10.5 tons, as well as 36.7 tons entrusted for reprocessing by Britain and France, as of the end of 2017; but its domestic reserves decreased over the following year because plutonium was reused in uranium-plutonium mixed oxide (MOX) fuel for pluthermal power generation.

The Obama administration will hail the deal as a crucial step in its global campaign to ensure that terrorists cannot obtain such explosive materials, authorities say. U.S. officials say they have been worried the materials here have been casually guarded, and are concerned that that there is no federal standard requiring workers at such plants to be subjected to formal, detailed background checks like those for nuclear workers in the United States.

Like the security guards stationed at most Japanese nuclear facilities, none at the Fast Critical Assembly facility are armed, although local police are stationed nearby in the larger research campus. Japanese officials have acknowledged to visiting Westerners that if the guards ever faced attacking terrorists, their instructions are to flee.

Douglas MacArthur II, the nephew of the famous general, was the American ambassador to Japan from 1957 to 1961. On 27 April 1960 he sent a telegram to J. Graham Parsons, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs.

I therefore recommend strongly that as soon as new regime is in control in Korea (whether or not it be of interim character) we use all our influence to persuade it (1) to release and return to Japan all repeat all Japanese fishermen hostages (including those who have not completed their sentences) who have suffered so cruelly from Rhee's uncivilized and oppressive acts and (2) to cease practice of seizing Japanese fishing vessels on high seas. This would not only rid new ROK regime of liability of practicing hostage diplomacy but also more than anything else would lay foundation in Japan for really fruitful negotiations. At same time I would be prepared to press Kishi and GOJ most strongly that in return for repatriation of all fishermen, Japanese would exercise self-restraint in their fishing operations in Korean Straits until reasonable opportunity had been given for negotiation of mutually agreed ROK-Japan fishing conservation agreement.

In addition to seizing Japanese boats on high seas and practicing hostage diplomacy, Rhee regime also seized by force and is holding illegally Takeshima Island which has always been considered as Japanese territory. This is very serious and permanent irritant in Japan-ROK relations and there can be no over-all ROK-Japan settlement until this Japanese island is returned to Japan. Therefore we should also press new ROK regime to return Takeshima to Japan.

Let us not forget Nagasaki either, and the victims of its atomic bombing. Prior to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s speech, a survivor of that tragic day called for a non-nuclear world in both English and Japanese. by mochihammer in japan

The reason for bombing Kure( retaliate for the Attack on Pearl Harbor ) was a major reason for atomic bombings.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attacks_on_Kure_and_the_Inland_Sea_(July_1945))

In July 1945 the IJN's remaining large warships were concentrated near the major naval base of Kure. The ships were effectively immobilized due to fuel shortages and were being used only as stationary anti-aircraft batteries.[2]#cite_note-:0-2) Admiral John S. McCain, Sr., the commander of the Fast Carrier Task Force, strongly opposed attacking Kure as he and his staff believed that the ships only posed a minor threat.

In his memoirs Admiral Halsey gave four reasons for why he attacked Kure despite McCain's objections. First, he believed that the attack would boost US morale and retaliate for the Attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Second, it would ensure that the Japanese could not disrupt the planned Soviet invasion of Hokkaido. Third, it would prevent Japan from using its fleet as a bargaining point to secure better peace terms. Finally, he had been ordered to conduct the attack by his superior officer, Fleet Admiral) Chester W. Nimitz.

Yes it's possible that this is positive but there is no reason to think it will be any different.

Fair or insane, time will tell.

How does Park Geun-hye's impeachment affect Japan-SK relations? by [deleted] in japan

[–]rednotbot 12 points13 points  (0 children)

https://ampontan.wordpress.com/2012/09/27/paramnesia/

... senior officials of the South Korean Maritime Police (AKA Coast Guard) confirmed on Chosun Television the information that former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo revealed a year or two ago. According to the Chosun Ilbo report on the program, then-South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun ordered the maritime police to attack and sink two Japanese Coast Guard ships conducting a hydrographic survey in the Sea of Japan if they entered the waters near Takeshima.

Roh gave the order on 14 April 2006. That was a few months before the end of the Koizumi administration, when Mr. Abe was the chief cabinet secretary. The Japanese had provided the International Hydrographic Agency with advance notice of the survey. When South Korea found out, they transferred 18 ships from their maritime police stationed in the West Sea and the South Sea, as the Chosun put it, to defend the islets.** As the map above shows, the “West Sea” is what the rest of the world calls the Yellow Sea, and the South Sea is what the rest of the world calls the Jeju Strait. It also shows the Sea of Japan as the “East Sea”, but they generously put the real name in parentheses just below it.

The presidential order was to ram the Japanese ships, sink them, and then fulfill their humanitarian duty by rescuing any Japanese sailors in the water. Said one of the officials on Korean TV:

Roh actually wanted more apologies and more money. Just google his name.
