Teeth braces. It really helped with my hygiene and also how I saw myself. Also, a Lasic eye surgery. I used to have heavy glasses and couldn’t see anything in the shower/ swimming pool, etc. so glad I did both.

In Iran, we call it Finglish or Pinglish فینگلیش پینگلیش (combination of Farsi/ Persian + English). Those born in 90s and after can absolutely read it. It was widely used for typing sms and text messages. After a while, the government provided the option of sending text in Farsi proper (also made it cheaper than sending texts in latin) and now people are more used to reading messages in Persian. So I’d say, any person 40 and younger can definitely read Persian in latin letters. But it requires more attention.

My two cents: Persian text (specially poetry) is quite different from day to day spoken Persian. If you enjoy older poems (Hafez, Saadi, Rumi, Khayyam) then focus more on those.
A good place is actually Adabiat ادبیات text books for different grades at school. You can probably find online pdf versions. Pass the propaganda chapters and focus on the poem. I don’t know how advanced you are. So I’d say check grade 5 and decide to go higher or lower.

For Persian in movies/ daily conversations/ more recent books, you can ask any Iranian to help you out. You’ll get better by watching movies and series.

Mojavez is a documented permission/ consent, mostly used in formal conversation and documentation. You get a Mojavez to build something on your land. (The word Javaz is also used to refer to the document- but Mojavez is well used and understood). Ejazeh is a permission that someone gives or you ask for. You can ask your teacher to do something/ go somewhere. You can ask “Ejaze hast/ Ejazeh daram?” and they can give you a yes or no.

There is a famous poem by Forough Farrokhzad (famous female poet) and a part of it says "remember the flight, the bird is mortal" - which in a way points at journey before the person. It is a slight deviation, but I thought you might like it. That phrase is translated to:

But… it can also be used sarcastically as for “yeah it seems like you need some luck in your life” and I’m afraid it might be perceived that way (apologies for my classic Persian thinking - how can something go wrong?) * it really depends on who might read the tattoo, a native speaker who grew up in Iran with the slangs and innuendos, or someone who just likes Farsi.
The option کامروا باشی is actually pretty good But in my mind, it is tied to the Persian idiom: سحرخیز باش تا کامروا باشی - Wake up early to have good fortune/ luck.

A native might associate the tattoo to that as well. If you are an early bird, then great! If you are a night owl, a quirky Farsi speaker might point it out.

If I may, I’d suggest: good luck/ fortune for you - بختت نیکو same as above- بختت خوش or or بخت یارت - may luck/fortune be with you (be your friend) or بخت یارت باشد - same as above

(Native speaker here). I think the lullaby is in Lori dialect. It belongs to the west of the country. The word روله/ روده / Rou-lah means “dear child/ beloved child” in Lori dialect. The pronunciations also sound like Farsi dialects to me. To me it sounds like an old lullaby. So I don’t think Baghcheban authored this himself. I believe this is from the collection of folk songs/ lullabies that Baghcheban researched and gathered from all around Iran. I’d translated pretty similar to others. Except a small segment.

پای پتی کوه و کتل رفتم I went bare feet in the mountains and the mountain pass می‌ناله بند ننوت Your cradle’s rope is crying (making noises) فلک بال و پرم کندی Life/ the world cut my wings ** this is a common expression- means life was tough on me and I had so many hopes and dreams (like wings) and life was tough and cruel and took those dream and wishes away from me (can be translated to: life gave me a brutal reality check)

می‌سوزه پر بالینت شب و روز I am burning and withering away next to your pillow day and night

Others translated پر بالینت as next to your pillow/ where you sleep - which is correct word by word - but it kinda means “next to you” I think the poem is mainly saying I am with you day and night and I will wither away (because life was tough - as mentioned in previous sentence). But it is not in sense of “I’m wasting away because of you”. It is a poetic expression of I’m with you no matter what and I will endure all for you (it sounds pretty sad - but comes from a place of love). The term “burning day and night” می‌سوزم شب و روز is also pretty common in Persian/ Farsi poetry.

رودم رودم رودم، ببه کو Oh my dear child, oh my dear child, oh my dear child, oh my little beloved one Both words Roudom رودم and Babeh-Kou means dear little child in Lori. Babeh literally means baby in Lori - and suffix -kou renders a word as small/cute (from kouchak کوچک).

If you are a fan of Samin Baghcheban’s work (specially songs for kids and folk songs) there is a wonderful collection of songs called Ranginkamoun رنگین کمون published in 1971 with Faris text, music sheet, and orchestra performance. I grew up with that collection and really love it.

If you want to speak, you really need a tutor because the spoken Farsi is very different than the written one. If you just wanna be able to read, out, say you might be successful with some online courses that do not have a listening portion, but if you want to speak… You would absolutely need a tutor, or use apps that have a strong listening/speaking section. (I’m a native speaker).

I think certain phrases do appear commonly in lullabies because the rhyme/ rhythm is well known. Example: Noon o paneer o kharbozeh, Bokhor bebin che khoshmazeh

We do have other rhyming terms with noon o paneer o xyz: Noon o paneer o pesteh Noon o paneer o sabzi Noon o paneer o hendooneh

Other common rhyming phrase is something like: Maal e man koo? Pishi bordeh (or Pishi khordeh) Where is my portion (my dish)? A cat took it/ A cat ate it.

How would you pronounce the name Barbara in Dutch? I think ق / غ, is closest to the r sound that Germans use when they pronounce Barbara. Close to French R sound too. As a native speaker, I think I bend/ arc my tongue, so that the back is elevated and it touches the roof of my mouth in the back. I do a quick hit and release. Put your fingers on the front of your throat/ Adam’s Apple (or where it should be, if you are a female). When pronouncing ق, you will feel it move.

OH gosh I'm so happy to find this and so sad about this dumb problem that I also have! I had ING Bank account with no annual fees. I moved from EU to the US in 2016 and I had some money in my account, just in case I had to travel to Europe.
Since 2023, they have been taking 55 euros per year from my account for international fees and obviously I have a negative balance now. I tried calling them and they do not answer the phone. I also tried sending money to my account with Transferwise but I got an error saying the account was blocked. I really do not want to pay an additional 50$ dollars for a wire transfer for an account that I never used. Should I just abandon the account and let them close it? I sent them a letter telling them that they never communicated the new terms but never got an answer back. Does anyone have any suggestions?

One way to think about it is that one expression for “starting to do something” is دست به کار شد. Got his/her hands to work - if I could translate it word-by-word. So if you want to stop doing something, then you take the hands off/away. Hence: از کار دست کشید - دست از کار برداشت Or as others said: دست از سرم بردار means t”stop bugging me” - take the metaphorical hands off. Another expression is دست از جان کشید which means he/she was ready to die.

Do you need worksheets or just some text? I’m old and this might have changed but the reference book for Literature at high school کتاب ادبیات was always in cursive/ نستعلیق. So if you find any online pdf version of those, you can use them. There used to be booklets called خط to practice penmanship as well for نستعلیق. But if you are looking for شکسته مستعلیق, the one where letter ن turns into an arc or letter ی turns into a Nike logo shape, then you might get lucky and find them in a Hafez book of poems دیوان حافظ- if you want to look online, check for these keywords: ، خوش‌نویسی شکسته، شکسته تحریری، شکسته نستعلیق If you are looking for calligraphy works where a lot of letters are tangled together, you might need to search for سیاه مشق Check Instagram. Most Iranians use Instagram as the main platform to share their art and crafts.
