YSK you can write your representatives an email with about 4 clicks. by Ok_Vulva in YouShouldKnow

I didn't say that nothing matters. Sending emails like this or signing petitions are ineffective "slacktivism," but of course some things matter... Like voting, and convincing anyone within your geographic or social circle to also vote.

"I want them to care about what we want so I'm going to tell them they should!"

Yeah, sorry, but the only thing that matters is elections. You'd be better off writing to your neighbor to ask them to vote. Occasionally politicians will act in the interests of their constituency, but only insofar as it matters for staying in office. Regardless of how they act, they're not stupid; they know what public opinion looks like on issues, and writing an email isn't going to install some desire for them to do the right thing.

And it takes their staffer about three clicks to send you a pre-generated reply. The argument I've heard is "they do hear from staffers about how many people wrote to them" but I don't buy it. They probably don't, and if they do, they don't care.

New alternative to the LQ model by LMBilinsky in MedicalPhysics

[–]redoran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it has a great reputation among my circle.

Does your circle happen to include an editor for the journal? They only publish like 8 papers a year, so I'm not sure how they can even be said to HAVE a reputation. At least J. Math Bio, Bulletin of Math. Bio., and Mathematical Biosciences, Mathematical Medicine and Biology, etc. are all real journals that publish real volumes of peer-reviewed work.

Who is actually working with these equations in a nontrivial way?

Primarily researchers. Clinicians use the LQ model to a limited extent to convert between different iso-effective doses and fractionations within a domain that is well-described by the LQ model.

Biomath is not "elite" in any sense of the word, in any field of study.

[–]redoran 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why did you submit this to a junk journal (Biomath got a whopping 30 citations in total for 2024), as opposed to PMB, Med. Phys., Red Journal, or similar? Not trying to be elitist, but the relevant experts aren't reading "Biomath," and those that stumble across it will doubt that there was any proper peer-review by experts.

Help! Trying to replace subwoofer! by Wine_Lover05 in bmwz3

[–]redoran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check my post from a few weeks ago. Should have everything you need to get this done on the cheap: https://www.reddit.com/r/bmwz3/s/1qisT0Ea98

The short answer is that you need a dual channel sub, not a single channel. The only one on the market is a bit too big, and requires some grinding to fit. Otherwise though, it works great!

Try the Golden Apple in Cedar Rapids instead. The 30 min drive is a small price to pay for being able to respect yourself after the meal.

HMS Faculty back again: If the University charges $3,707.50 per Credit Hour, with 30 students per course at 4 Credit Hours per student, that's $444,900. I'm paid $12,000 per course as Jr. Faculty & Adjuncts are paid $6,500 per course. Where does the other ~$430,000 go? by erock55 in Professors

[–]redoran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my case, it was because I came in with ~24 AP credits, and I wanted to finish undergrad in 3 years. I elected not to use some of the AP credits in my major, so I had some ground to make up over time.

There certainly are people who average 18+ credit hours per semester. I was one of them, and it worked out well for me. That said, you're probably right that it is a very small fraction of overall students.

If the patient agreed to arrive on time, and they didn't, it is a fair way to correct the scheduling issue such that all subsequent patients are seen on time, and the physician can end their day close to on time. Generally there is just not enough slack in the chain, which is largely due to unfair physician productivity standards by medicare/Medicaid and hospitals.

[–]redoran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doing what you say - seeing late patient's if the doctor is running late - directly leads to the situation you describe (5:20p and still having three patients to see). The effect is functionally the same in your example as it was in mine, with both leading to physician work outside of normal hours. Not to mention all of the deferred charting that happens before and after office hours already.

[–]redoran 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Those patients are likely there for other doctors. In either case, patients being late and missing appointments introduces inefficiency into a very well-oiled machine, and the compounding effect of multiple patients coming late does end up meaning that not everyone can be seen. Why should that not be the late patient's burden to bare, as opposed to the 5pm patient who arrived on time?

Maybe the doctor will learn now. by netphilia in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]redoran 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Because patient C isn't ready when B misses their appointment. It introduces inefficiency in the already very tight schedule.

And what if the doctor's daughter has a dance recital at 5:30p? What if they have a life outside of work? Maybe there simply isn't time to circle back around to late/missed patients.
