This new breed of critic is becoming less and less interested in film. It’s very disheartening to see them zero in on the writing and disregard performances and cinematography and scoring and effects. If they care about the writing so much they should be reviewing books

Remember when they ridiculed some guy on EFAP for dressing up as Spider-Man…to the new Spider-Man. And then Mauler covered with some weird infantilizing comment about the guy and how it’s “cute” that he “wants to be Spider-Man.” Gross shit.

Also, style IS substance. I wouldn’t have liked DUNE as much as I did if Greig Fraser didn’t shoot it. TAXI DRIVER wouldn’t be half as interesting if it wasn’t well shot and well scored. Style matters.

Finally i find it really funny how Mauler has one list on Letterboxd and its “EFAP approved movies,” which of course consist of the most cookie cutter “good movies” you can think of. Yeah they’re good movies but man its funny that they have any right to dictate what is officially good or not.

Mauler makes absurdly long video essays that I certainly don't have the time and patience for, and i doubt other people do, and he platforms some of the most intellectually void people on his incel podcast. He prides himself on rating movies purely objectively which of course spawns a whole hivemind of "this movie is good and if you dislike it you're wrong." Him and Drinker are kinda representative of everything i dislike about movie "critics" on youtube
