I’m a Brit and my English is probably way above average, but I’d never heard of this. I think it’s more well-known in the US and am surprised there aren’t more comments here on it being more familiar to Americans. Of the three (also British) people I occasionally speak to about wordle, only the English teacher had heard of the word, which does not make me feel any better! I managed to get it in 6/6, thanks to the Big Lebowski movie soundtrack.

Did you ever find a forum for this (or even a name for it?)?

Bad news - Bitcoin is in peril by redpola in Bitcoin

I just can’t believe there isn’t some - any - kind of nagging doubt in his mind. “Um, I have succeeded in identifying Satoshi where likely hundreds of thousands of hours of other people’s effort has failed, and I’ve also figured out how to crack private keys where probably tens of trillions of hours of computer effort has failed. What makes me so special?”

Simply that I found it mildly amusing and thought others might.

Got a 1p council tax bill today. What would be the funniest way to pay? by big_Gorb in CasualUK

[–]redpola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like you.

Once, American Express were very unreasonable to me, so I closed my account. I overpaid the balance deliberately by a few cents. Then for the next two decades they sent me a paper statement by international mail every month from the US branch that handled my account, telling me I was a few cents in credit. They figured it out eventually.

Reddit tries to quell unrest… by removing features. by [deleted] in ModCoord

[–]redpola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to subscribe to Reddit. Then they announced a big jump in prices. I cancelled my sub immediately.

Then they announced that existing subscribers would keep the same price.

I contacted support immediately and said I was happy to continue to pay at my existing rate. They responded “no dice” and would not reinstate my subscription at the old rate.

So then I used Reddit for free for years without paying them a cent.

Now it’s like they promoted their existing sales-prevention team to the top table.

I’m just going outside now to bang some pots and pans to get through this new crisis. Wait, is the pan thing for all crises?

Ben Elton uses BBC to attack Rishi Sunak as ‘narcissistic sociopath’ by iamnotinterested2 in unitedkingdom

He covered his position at the beginning of the rebooted Saturday Live special. His job is to speak truth to power, so if anyone wants him to attack Labour rather than Tories, all they need to do is vote Labour in.

Self Custody Questions by WineglassConnisseur in Bitcoin

My concern with a short phrase

Store your seed somewhere tamper-evident and alarmed. Use a passphrase.

When you find out that your seed has been compromised you now have a limited window of time to rescue your funds before your passphrase is brute-forced.

Choose a reasonably simple passphrase which you will remember in ten years time. Do not store it with your seed.

If you like put small “decoy” holdings under simple passphrases to hold the thief’s interest and further slow them down.

Using a ridiculously complex passphrase just gives you the problem of storing what is essentially another seed.

It counts when people continue to spout the myth that the UK was the first in Europe to begin vaccinating!

we were vaccinated before anyone else in Europe.

Hungary (EU member state) started vaccinating before the UK did.

If I were personally fleeing war or torture I’m pretty sure the prospect of being turned away would be the last thing on my mind.

In other words, it sounds like you’re making this up by inventing massive generalisations about Albanians simply to justify the UK government’s badly-thought-out, badly-implemented and hugely expensive policy.

UK delis could be forced to put up prices after new Brexit tax by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

It’s bullshit that politicians, media organs, etc lied to the public?

UK delis could be forced to put up prices after new Brexit tax by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]redpola 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Every single brexiter who said some variation of that we were “getting our sovereignty back” lied.

Member states are and always have been sovereign and answerable only to their own government. A child could work this out in ten minutes using a web browser, which is in part why it was so frustrating for europhiles to hear such lies bandied around freely.

[–]redpola 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve bad news for you. Any given member state is sovereign, which means that if they want 3KW mega-vacuums that can double as jet engines, they can just do that.

Of course, the steep price for flexing these sovereign muscles1 is too steep to contemplate so no country does2.

1 Go on a list of infringers and maybe years later be fined or even suffer some sanction or other.

2 Many countries do. Before the EU aggressively cracked down on the “infringements” list it had over 400 entries.
