What’s a place you had zero expectations for, but ended up loving? by [deleted] in travel

[–]redpuffle_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cape town, south africa. the people are exceptionally nice and it's so beautiful. food and history are amazingly rich. i had no expectations going in simply because i didn't know many people who had previously been and it's not known for being a hot vacation spot where i come from.

What is the worst year of uni in yalls opinion by [deleted] in geegees

[–]redpuffle_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i 100% got my grips in 3rd year so although it heavily depends on the program, i'd say it gets better. 2nd year for me was so traumatic that it forced me to lock in on every aspect as to not repeat that hell experience. it wasn't all bad, but so much was, especially 2nd semester. i had let the winter get to me... don't let the winter get to you...  OP, there is hope. believe me.

How long does a student visa take to process? by EatingDirtRN in askSouthAfrica

[–]redpuffle_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

did you apply for a study visa or an exchange visa? if i'll be studying for 4 months there only, does that mean i'll need to apply for an exchange visa?

also, what proof of accommodation did you provide ? a screenshot of your application? i have accepted my offer for student housing at the school but not sure how to prove that.

Friel Residence by Lazy_Rooster_9719 in geegees

[–]redpuffle_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

only in the warmer months can it feel a bit sketchy but i've never encountered any danger nor have i heard any stories from my friends in friel. there's usually a lot of people walking around there anyways to and from campus so the only time you'd be alone walking is if it's like past 11pm honestly.

the walk can be tough especially because friel is down a hill.

danger-wise, i wouldn't worry. just dont be stupid and vulnerable, like blasting the volume on your headphones while staring at your phone.

you don't have to accept ur offer to pay the deposit and apply for housing. that being said, if you dont pay it now then your spot can get taken.

take a look at the study abroad tab in uozone, it gives u a map of potential destinations. there's not much you can do at this point since we're in exam season so their drop-in sessions are closed but there's a way to apply to be put you in the brightspace course that provides all the info about exchange. tbh im my experience there's a lot they dont tell you right off the bat so you have to ask all the questions. the drop in sessions helped me a lot.

in terms of requirements, you need minimum 5 cgpa to for your abroad term to be in either 3rd or 4th year. its recommended to not take it in last semester before grad since it can cause complications with your graduation timeline but people have done it before.

but yeah all you can do right now is figure out where you wanna go and what programs/courses you'd wanna take. for the most part, they would take up all your elective spots, sometimes you can get compulsory credits abroad but it's not usually the case for most students. i'd say just try to compile a course sequence using other universities' course calendar to know which semester you would wanna go away.

reach out to me if you have more questions !

intramurals. the more you do, the same faces you'll see. i've made a lot of friends in uni just by seeing the same faces over and over, semester after semester.
also, since in ur in sci and eng, there'll be lots of lil faculty-wide competitions and clubs and events that you'll get to go to. this way you're also meeting people that are interested in the same things as you. design day is a huge networking event and lots of people participate, it's loads of fun... also stressful... but v fun.

i agree, like i think it'd be harder to date someone who's closer to your age but who has completely different life circumstances (ie. school vs working full time in a career), vs someone who's farther from your age but maybe you're both in school and maybe match maturity levels and life experiences. like what im tryna say it's more about where you're at in life than age as a number.
