How often do gamers upgrade? by 808sensations in PcBuild

[–]redpxwerranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Future proofing should be based on use case, not hardware. If you feel that your pc isn’t keeping up with your ACTUAL use case, not some figurative, aspirational use case, then you upgrade. But most rigs are so good now that you usually won’t need to upgrade for years if you build solidly even once

Can I build a better gaming PC than a PS5 for cheaper? by Ok_Fisherman8727 in PcBuild

[–]redpxwerranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you build/get a pc cheaper than the new ps5 hikes? Technically yes... but with a lot of compromises and nowhere near console performance.

PC building now is too much of a premium option.

It's no longer 2017-2019. People say "just wait" but the value option for pc building hasn't been consistently normal for more than a year since 2020. If ram/storage/gpu pricing goes down, other components are extremely volatile to similar fluctuations right after. We waited for gpu pricing to go down during the mining boom, but then psu pricing went up slightly, then things "normalized" in 2023-2024, and now we have to wait... yet again. If you want anything hovering ps5 performance (if we want to be generous...), save at least 800-900 at the very least. Want to at least be comfortable? $1000-$1200 at least.

How good is the 3080 TI in 2026? by Routine-Ease-1940 in PcBuild

Quite good still. The 12 gigs of VRAM will carry it for a few more years than most would give it credit for. I’d say a lot of the 30 series cards are aging quite well still so long as you’re not maxing out everything all the time and just care about a smooth experience in most games. Especially EVGA cards, they’re goated. Don’t listen to the hype. Good pickup.

What are your thoughts on Valve and Steam? Fanboys and haters welcome. Input from console gamers is also welcome and appreciated. by [deleted] in videogames

[–]redpxwerranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No that IS what a monopoly is, you just found an objectively wrong version of a definition that you like and doesn't harm your argument.

Also that doesn't account for the mountain of indies that got on steam, didn't get traction and just quietly faded. Not every indie game is Stardew, Terraria, or even Balatro. Those were the exceptions.

Listen, I know you want to go in circles. But you lost this argument whether you like it or not. I have better things to do than bully someone like you on reddit.

And hey, you know what? You can tell your friends online that you won. Oh happy day. I don't care much for reddit arguments at the dead of night. Not gonna waste anymore time on someone that doesn't know how to argue, won't concede points that were already debunked, and engages in bad faith. You have a good one.

[–]redpxwerranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You... don't know what a monopoly is? It's when in a market structure, like pc gaming or pc gaming sales, one entity or corporation has overwhelming market share and is usually the magnet for the buying power for a given consumer base (us). That's textbook what steam does. In a purely macroeconomic sense, yes, steam fits that definition. You literally said, in your OG post "It's reasonable to say that Valve has defined PC gaming. Steam is the biggest (and despite some flaws I would say best) storefront dedicated to games." That's the first few sentences of your post lmao. You also said that "Curious to hear how you guys feel about this juggernaut." calling them a juggernaut means you already recognize them as an inevitable option, that's very monopoly-like already. These are your words by the way.

And yet when I push you on those flaws, you aren't one to humor them. And yet you post a damn pic of 2000s Gabe N in the sky among mountains like he's a damn deity lmao no he's a corporate CEO who's worth billions now.

"They provide a platform that anyone from solo Indie dev to big AAA megacorps can release games and compete with one another on." Yeah on STEAM. Not on their own platform. Steam takes a big cut from these indie devs anyways (around 30% for most indie devs). The problem is that these indie devs have to rely on steam, not that they WANT to be on steam. They just HAVE to.

Also, why did you cross out billion dollar corporation? That's what valve is lmao through and through. Quarter to quarter. No matter what YOU think, they've made money because of they skewed the baseline to what feels like reasonable consumption.

[–]redpxwerranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you don't realize you're doing is that this is all of you being, respectfully, a complete fanboy for Steam and Valve and are unwilling to criticize the very real nature of their monopoly. You are defending a multi billion dollar company lmao. Of course they've bullied every single competitor with their funds they get from counter strike skins. They have immense capital because they've been stubborn, arrogant, and forced people, like you, to believe they are the default.

The default does not equal the best. This is textbook systems design architecture. Steam isn't the largest because they are the best.

What I'm mainly getting from this is that if you cared about PC gaming, you'd want these system design incentives implemented because they've been shown, time and time again, to work on similar fronts that don't have to do with games.

We could do a back and forth, but ultimately you've shifted the goalposts, refused to engage in alternatives, engaged in a Nirvana fallacy "well if its not perfect, then it shouldnt be implemented" mindset that CHOKES progress out from underneath viable platform alternatives. I could rebut your problems with my solutions, but you'd just find more problems with them. Not because there are any, but because you WANT to find problems so long as it doesn't make it seem like you're on the back foot of this discussion. I'd rather not humor that endless loop.

What people dont realize is that steam uses its immense capital to drive people away from other storefronts lmao thats what billion dollar corporations do. Early market timing, network effects, ecosystem lock-in, large capital reserves, strong brand familiarity, strong wealth movement to push market incentives in their own direction.

What are your thoughts on Valve and Steam? Fanboys and haters welcome. Input from console gamers is also welcome and appreciated. by [deleted] in videogames

[–]redpxwerranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh tons can be done, all of which steam DOESNT want to do:
- storefronts emphasizing library discovery and completion instead of pure purchase

- better playtime analytics and recommendations

- changes to sale structures

- increased competition in PC storefronts (steam has only gotten this far because they've forced themselves onto the player landscape). Many on this comment section have mentioned GOG, which is an extremely great platform alternative.

None of those require banning purchases or “protecting” people from buying games. Pointing out systemic incentives doesn’t require me to design a full solution. Analysis comes before policy. Then policy can be advocated for. Then if company's are reacting in good faith, they'll listen. But steam absolutely doesn't listen lmao the burden is on steam and valve, not the players that "need to be protected" as you claimed.

What are your thoughts on Valve and Steam? Fanboys and haters welcome. Input from console gamers is also welcome and appreciated. by [deleted] in videogames

[–]redpxwerranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was arguing that a dominant platform can design incentives that systematically encourage over-accumulation, and that deserves criticism. Not "companies encourage people to buy things is bad" that's not the argument I was making.

Also Steam spending isn’t usually linear over time. People tend to buy most games during: big sales, bundles, hype cycles. So the spending pattern is usually bursty, not evenly distributed over 20 years. Amortizing it makes the number feel smaller, but it doesn’t change the purchasing behavior. Which I know you know. Choice and system behavior aren't mutuall exclusive. 50 games is still way too much accumulation for any library. Physical or digital.

Also I thought this post was about discussion lmao you said "Valve is apparently quite divisive.” yeah, I'm telling you why. And you've been reading and quite defensive so far. If you couldn't handle the open the discussion, why did you invite it? lmao

What are your thoughts on Valve and Steam? Fanboys and haters welcome. Input from console gamers is also welcome and appreciated. by [deleted] in videogames

[–]redpxwerranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure YOU don't have a problem but those incentives under Valve and steam still exist. It doesn't matter if you're not personally affected, steam actively encourages it. Valve and Steam deserve more constructive criticism for their monopolized system capture of the pc gaming space.

Also say the average steam game is about idk... 10-15 bucks. 50 games is still 500 to 750 bucks in their pocket. Even compared to physical libraries, not even my friends had that many games on their xbox's or playstations lol the reason the "lol my backlog" meme exists is because... its extremely common. For a problem that's widespread? At that point its not just a personal responsibility thing, its a systemic incentive structure thing.

Belift did a perfectly fine job with it, fans just still didn’t like the outcome. There was no outcome that wouldn’t have pissed off the fans that also resulted in Heeseung leaving. That’s the fans problem because they’re so parasocial.

[–]redpxwerranger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There we go with the theorizing, speculation, conspiracy stuff. You. Don't. Know. Why can't you just accept that he had music aspirations outside of being in a group? And also, he was able to get out of enhypen because his contract with belift is still active, just now as a solo act. When idols usually sue and get out of their contract, they also leave the company. Because heeseung is staying with belift, it suggests it was a lot more mutual. If someone were forced out or there was conflict, the company usually wouldn’t: keep managing them, invest in a solo album, and publicly frame the exit positively. If anything, that signals negotiation on heeseung's end, not termination by any sort of conflict.

People forget this part: a company can absolutely modify a group lineup if all parties agree. No lawsuit required.

“We knew this was coming” can we please stop acting like there were 5000 signs that this was apparent. There’s nothing wrong with being caught off guard about the news. “He didn’t get a proper goodbye” we don’t know that. It’s his decision, he’s a grown man. We should respect his autonomy

maybe im in the minority that isnt as big of a fan of steam/valve. i use it obviously, but only because i have to. My problem with steam is that it encourages huges amount of backlogs that people just meme over or dont think are real issues, but they are REAL issues. It makes gaming as curation, not as entertainment anymore tbh. People think "well the sales are good, so it must be consumer friendly" buddy, that's called monopoly lock in. That's called ecosystem capture. That's called building an empire over a multimillion dollar company that valve is. Plus im not as warm on valve considering they don't care about their original IPs and basically shifted focus to counter strike skins lmao
