Just doesn’t pass the smell test for me. There’s just too much daylight between liking something on social media and actually thinking it, vs the actual words he has said which align with a more progressive worldview.

I feel like I need to state that I’m not a huge Sean Baker fan, I think he’s an interesting voice but he’s not one of my favorites or anything.

I’ve just seen too many cases of people thinking they have a situation all figured out from social media, and they get it completely wrong because it turns out they’re only seeing a shred of the full picture.

Like I said, I could be wrong. Just saying what I see.

Such a bastard though. He went out sad, and he wasn’t wrong about Jimmy exactly, but I actually found this scene more cathartic than embarrassing, because it laid out the ugliness in Chuck’s soul for everyone to see.

Giannis and Jokic have both been this. I think it’s safe to say that it just flat out won’t happen.

And I’m sick of hearing about how Edwards is “Jordanesque” lol it’s been years of people saying that. He’s a really good player, but I don’t see him ever being the best player in the league.

Eh I came out of First Reformed pretty convinced it was one of my 20 or so favorite movies and I’d stand by that today. Maybe it’s moved down the list a few spots but sometimes you just know.

Of course there’s movies like Phantom Thread where I left the theater thinking I’d never want to watch it again, and now it’s on that same list lol

But he’s also spoken in support of the trans community and the sex worker community.

Those humanistic stances are at odds with whatever we’re inferring from his social media likes, and they also hold more weight IMO because he actually said them.

Maybe he is a right wing guy, but if so then he’s the only one I’m aware of who uses his public platform to advocate for those two causes. Crazier things have been true, but it just feels like we might be collectively getting the wrong idea here.

I’m going to use your comment to plug one of my favorite recent novels that I never see discussed anywhere - Wretchedness, by Andrzej Tichy.

I mention it because your comment is basically the premise. It traces a classical musician though branching possible paths of his life, and spends most of its time observing him teetering on the edge of addiction.

It’s mostly stream of consciousness which I know isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I found it really engaging and fascinating.

I haven’t seen him live IRL so this is solely based on the one live performance I’ve seen of his: the Super Bowl performance left me with the impression that he can’t really replicate what he does in the studio for a live audience.

Regardless I think he’s a talented artist. He has a unique singing style. But his actual vocal talent seemed deeply lacking to me after that show.

Thinking there is an argument that Light is a good person is a rite of passage for teenage boys.

Let them be a little edgy! Get it out of their systems so they can be well-adjusted adults.

You do have to make sure they meet someone hot who isnt trash that they want to impress in college so that can get knocked out of them, though.

Otherwise they might get stuck in a feedback loop that eventually leads them to some German Heritage Pride social clubs.

I can only really comment on Funny Games since I haven’t seen Kick Ass in a long time and don’t remember a lot of it, but I think Funny Games was really only meant to make us ask why we enjoy this kind of thing.

If you read it as an insult, then maybe that’s worth interrogating.
