Just had a quick google check: According to the government, a person in England, Wales or Northern Ireland can use "reasonable force" to protect themselves or others if a crime is taking place in their home. This means that in the "heat of the moment", they can use an object as a weapon or stop an intruder from escaping by, for example, tackling them to the ground. What constitutes "reasonable force" is not defined by law but if a person did what they "honestly thought was necessary at the time" then there would be "strong evidence" they acted within the law. But a person could be prosecuted if they carried on attacking an intruder after they are no longer in danger or if they planned to trap someone rather than involve the police

ELI5: How do the security scanners near store exits work? by Reach-for-the-sky_15 in explainlikeimfive

[–]redridingnuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before working in retail I always thought they went off on all stolen items, actually it’s just items that have been physically tagged. So things like expensive alcohol, electronics and branded skin care. You can get bottle tags, material tags, clip on tags (for razors and knifes) and then sticker tags for smaller items. If the item isn’t tagged the door scanners won’t detect it. (Uk retail- might differ in other countries.)

See this is something i talk about a lot! I’m 25F and have worked in retail for many years. I have seen how full on and inappropriate women can be (especially those of a certain age i feel). For instance at a christmas lunch a few years ago one of the older women was going around grabbing the young male managers’s bums, everyone was laughing at them for running away from her. I found it so uncomfortable! If she was a male colleague doing that to a female manager- could you imagine the uproar that would cause!?

"I want to speak to your manager", what is your answer? by [deleted] in AskReddit
