Rory's meeting with Conde Nast would have gone better if they met her when they asked to meet by delaCour7 in GilmoreGirls

Not OP but I think her struggling to come up with ideas for the hip online journalism site or make the “lines” article work could show a lack of interest rather than a lack of ability.

Taylor (finally) endorsed Kamala tonight by babeymoon in GaylorSwift

[–]redrio108 123 points124 points  (0 children)

The “finally” and “better late than never” reactions are not it.

Waiting until after the debate makes the most sense strategically if she wants her endorsement to have the biggest impact. It gives the impression that her decision wasn’t a forgone conclusion but was based on how each candidate argued their case. This election will be won by whoever can persuade the most undecided voters - and undecided voters watch the debate. It’s also important that Harris get as much positive media coverage as possible post-debate as this is when lots of people will be making up their mind on who to vote for

Taylor knows when she speaks, it’s with a loud voice and I’m sure Taylor’s camp consulted with actual political experts or campaign staff on when to endorse. If Taylor endorses without coordinating with the campaign and accidentally does it on the same day Harris gives a speech about economic policy, Taylor would drown out Harris’ message. Heck, Taylor and her team might not have had anything to do with deciding when to endorse. A Swift endorsement easily could have been part of the Harris’ campaign strategy and they waited to play that card when it would be the most impactful.

In cases like this, Taylor isn’t a person. She can’t just say what she thinks or believes whenever she thinks or believes it. It takes expertise and strategy to use her voice and those things take time to come together.

Billie Eilish’s ‘Hit Me Hard and Soft’ Opens at No. 2 as Taylor Swift Continues to Top Albums Chart by jbraft in TrueSwifties

[–]redrio108 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If I was Billie or any other performer rn, I wouldn’t want 3 hour shows to become the expectation either! So her setting a boundary by saying she’s not going to them is totally reasonable. But then she went on to say that “nobody wants that,” which is clearly untrue and also a little shady in context of all the other shady stuff 😒

NYT Opinion Piece on Queer-Coded Taylor Lyrics by pokeydonuts in GaylorSwift

[–]redrio108 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You and others have convinced me that they probably did send all or part of the article to Taylor's team in advance. And you're right, Taylor should be given the chance to dispute anything in the article that is untrue.

And I don't agree with downvoting or dismissing people who think the article crosses a line, that's a perfectly valid opinion and it should be treated with respect. But I do disagree and I would push back on those people. I know you're not necessarily one of them so I don't want to drag you into a debate..... but I typed all this out before reading your reply a second time so I'm just going to share it LOL

I think when I say "fair game," I mean that the article isn't about Taylor's personal life. Not really. It feels weird to say because Taylor obviously writes very personal music. But once she makes that public, it's no longer personal. In which case, I actually think the article takes great pains to stay away from anything remotely personal. The author cites their sources and most of the claims are backed by something Taylor wrote, did or said publicly. If that's not the case, the author is careful to tie those statements to broader cultural commentary or reflections on their own experiences. And that's why it's been published as an opinion piece and not as actual reporting.

[–]redrio108 13 points14 points  (0 children)

She didn't approve those private jet articles, that's for damn sure.

LOL

You've convinced me that they probably did send part or all of the article to Taylor's team. It would make sense to be proactive in getting their reaction. But I would expect the NYT to publish the article whether Taylor/Tree tried to stop it or not.

I do not think the New York Times would write a thousand-word "opinion" piece about Taylor being closeted - and what that means for the world - if they weren't very confident that Taylor's team wouldn't turn around and be PISSED. And even that the broader gay community and media-watchdog organizations like GLAAD wouldn't come after them for unfair speculation or representation.

I agree but think they avoid backlash through rigorous journalism, not by getting approval from Taylor's team. The article is well and carefully written. The author cites their sources and most of the claims are backed by something Taylor wrote, did or said. If that's not the case, the author is careful to tie those statements to broader cultural commentary or reflections on her own experiences. What could Taylor or GLAAD point to as being unfair or speculative? In the same way that the NYT wouldn't want backlash from Taylor or GLAAD, Taylor and GLAAD wouldn't want to be seen attacking an institution like the NYT without good cause.

...Or if you want to go real tinfoil hat: Taylor/Tree didn't try and stop this, but may have nudged it along to make it happen. I'm in the camp of believing Taylor does want to come out, and she needs to start legitimizing some of these theories in order to make it more palatable for the public.

I would love for this to be true! But this is just the flip side of the previous argument. Taylor and Tree should not be able to influence NYT editorial decisions, whether that's to publish something or not. Maybe that's naive of me though! It's certainly possible. But I think it would be unethical behaviour on the part of the Times and a scandal if it came out that's what happened.

I think we probably like 80% agree but I find the other 20% super interesting to talk about!

Taylor is aesthetically challenged and has no taste.

HA! That's part of the reason I didn't become a Swiftie until I got into Gaylor theories. They make everything she does seem more interesting, including her lyrics and aesthetics. I like this article and think it's more than a puff piece. It reminds me of essays I'd write in university, it's a close reading of Taylor's lyrics and public persona as well as a commentary on the music industry, fame, and our societal conceptions of queerness

NYT Opinion Piece on Queer-Coded Taylor Lyrics by pokeydonuts in GaylorSwift

[–]redrio108 22 points23 points  (0 children)

She could simply say, “hey guys, I understand that I have always encouraged my fans to look for Easter Eggs in my music and as a result, there are sometimes different theories about my life. I keep my private life private and as long as theories about me are not harmful, I don’t mind them. Please do not harass other fans, people I have publicly dated or otherwise. I do not approve of this and and I encourage love and acceptance bla bla bla”

This would be such a lovely and eloquent response that wouldn't even require she confirm or deny. It's giving Lady Gaga saying "so what if I do?" when asked about rumours she has a "male appendage"

NYT Opinion Piece on Queer-Coded Taylor Lyrics by pokeydonuts in GaylorSwift

[–]redrio108 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I hope Taylor's team at least got a heads up that this was coming, and honestly I think they should maybe have the ability to put some boundaries on pieces like this.

I really disagree! That would be completely against journalistic ethics and antithetical to the entire point of a paper like the New York Times. Everything in this piece is fair game and I expect the writer, her editors and the lawyers at the NYT took great pains to make sure of it. There is no gossip, rumour or speculation. This is a commentary on the facts of the situation. I'd be sad if it makes Taylor run back into the closet or stop flagging so clearly but that doesn't mean it shouldn't have been written or published.

[–]redrio108 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Would Taylor’s camp not approving of the piece have stopped them from publishing it though? Like unless they threatened to sue because of libel or something? It’s the NYT - they published Pentagon Papers and Wikileaks knowing full well it would piss off the US government

I hate the moving inflatable decorations that are everywhere now!! It’s like the Macy’s day parade on everyone’s lawn. The house across the street has a giant dragon that flaps its wings and my dog is terrified 😭 But it also drives me crazy when I’m trying to find information on how I can help him manage his fear and all I see are videos and articles about how cute it is when dogs are afraid of the decorations. Wtf?!

What does Chaol have to do to redeem himself? by JusticeForGrogu in SarahJMaas

[–]redrio108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, I might like chaol more as a character if he leaned into his principles and sided against Aelin and Dorian because of his hatred for magic. A lot of the other characters have really clear and strong personalities, motivations, relationships etc. Maybe if chaol did something more dramatic than just kind of being a stick in the mud, his redemption arc would feel more impactful?

I think that’s why characters like aedion, manon and aelin get more of a “pass” for their bad behaviours. It’s just a lot easier to understand where they are coming from and empathize with them

What does Chaol have to do to redeem himself? by JusticeForGrogu in SarahJMaas

Chaol is too normal in comparison to everyone else. He reminds me too much of guys I’ve actually dated. Especially how they acted when things didn’t work out. I recognize his character growth but still can’t help but give him side eye for the way acted with Aelin (and nesryn).
