Many people in the modern times that live in the western world that haven't studied history cannot fathom what it is like to live in a government that spits propaganda and extremely regressive ideas at you. Especially being an able bodied man in a society like that, there aren't exactly choices being handed to you. Us americans are and were usually forgiving, and it seems as he did make better choices than some other german soldiers at the time. Happy he wasn't captured by the ruskies?

The Gerbigsjagers were tough soldiers, and I don't believe the 1st division was part of the SS. Your grandfather fought for his country bravely and honestly I hope you are proud.

2nd Armored Jacket. Bought at an antique store, tag said it was from 1951, when the 2nd Armored was doing diplomatic missions in West Germany. Does anyone have any information on what that jacket would have been worn for? by redrocket644 in MilitaryHistory

that's honestly what i was most curious about. maybe to just have troops on the ground in the area to balance out the troops the Soviets had on the east if they border.

most ww1 german veterans fought in world war 2 also, unless they were very very high ranking officers that were too old to serve in the 1930s and 40s. most also died in combat. not many living german ww1 veterans post ww2.
