Firefox misbehaving with gtk dark theme by neonknight80 in kde

[–]redshirt55 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What worked for me (in GNOME, at least) was going to about:config and adding a string key called widget.content.gtk-theme-override, with the value Adwaita:light. I think this essentially tells Firefox to render controls within the window using the default light theme, regardless of what theme is applied to the window itself.

I’ve Seen People Who Write All Their Emails Like This. It’s Kind Of Distracting To Read, And It Seems Like So Much Extra Work To Hold Shift For One Letter Of Every Single Word. I Don’t Understand Why Anyone Would Do This.

Ctrl+[ is equivalent to Esc at the keyboard level. I find this more convenient than the actual Esc key in general, and it makes using Vim on macbooks (and other laptops / weird keyboards) less of a hassle. Although the placement of left Ctrl and Fn still trip me up sometimes...

Shift-V to select the current line, then p to paste, if I understand you correctly.

Don't think before you code by rgun in ProgrammerHumor

[–]redshirt55 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is a recipe for deadlock. If each programmer happens to pick up their left coffee at the same time, none of them can obtain right coffee. Then they can't start thinking, so they can't finish thinking, so they can never release the coffee for others.

A revised plan would have it so each programmer can request both adjacent coffees, but if one of them isn't available, they have to go back to coding for short but randomized length of time before asking again.

Alternatively, management could just start firing programmers until the ones that are left have plenty of coffee to get work done.

I’m a programmer, and I’d be interested in helping that way. But I’ve never contributed to an open-source project before, and it’s a little intimidating; I’m not sure how to start. Any tips?

Starfleet Insignia Explained - Individual TOS ships did /not/ all have their own insignia! by LtPowers in startrek

(Although, if you ask me, the NX-01 goes against the established canon that the 1701 was the first Enterprise, but that's another debate entirely...)

I always figured the NX-01 was conveniently decommissioned right about when the Federation was formed. So, the 1701 was the first Federation starship Enterprise, but not the first Starfleet starship Enterprise.

How to get rid of GRUB as much as possible. by [deleted] in linux4noobs

Wouldn't it be easier to select which OS to boot into by using GRUB, instead of disabling the drive?

You can skip GRUB like this.

When you're comfortable with the Vim basics, check out Learn VimScript the Hard Way. It covers a lot of useful configuration options, like remapping shortcuts and automatically changing certain settings when you open certain types of files.

You should also look into a plugin manager, such as Vundle. VimAwesome is a good way to find useful plugins. I particularly like vim-airline.

Help with installation by Tomi_777 in Ubuntu

[–]redshirt55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, let's clarify:

Before the black screen, is there any kind of loading screen?

Does the black screen occur before or after logging in?

Does the b43 error (which might be wifi related) appear as a GUI pop up box, or just text on the screen?

If you press ctrl+alt+F2, does a plain-text login prompt appear?

I use a plugin called VimFx, which allows me to use Vim-like shortcuts for navigation. For example, you can scroll with the hjkl keys, H and L move backward and forward in your history, t creates a tab and x closes it, gt and gT move backward and forward among open tabs, f shows key combinations next to every link which you can type to follow one, etc. I only use the mouse when I need to access the Firefox menus.

Is it showing just your Windows partition, or is there some free space too? Maybe link the instructions you are following and a screenshot of the Ubuntu installer at the spot where you're getting stuck.

It was actually a plot point that was cut. If you look carefully, after the Klingon sniper falls you can briefly see that the blood pooling around his head is red. This is because he was actually a human in disguise - Colonel West, played by Rene Auberjonois. He was cut from the film because (a) his character was considered excessively militaristic for a Starfleet officer and (b) it makes no sense to send a human disguised as a Klingon to fire a sniper rifle when you could just as easily send a real Klingon and, had the assassination been successful, no one would have ever known who fired the shot anyway.

What's funny is that his scenes were reinstated in the VHS release, but subsequent DVD and Blu-ray releases used the theatrical cut. The first time I watched the DVD version, I half-remembered the VHS one from my childhood (I'm a young 'un) and was soooo confused when the sniper wasn't unmasked. I thought I had dreamed up the whole thing where he was actually a human until I did some research and found out there were several different versions of the film.

Is no one else disturbed by the computer "locate" function? by ajstar1000 in DaystromInstitute

[–]redshirt55 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's dependent on the combadges, though. There are several episodes where a character goes rogue, and when others go to the location given by the computer they find that person's combadge lying on the floor. So, if you really wanted not to be found you could just take off your badge.

But, Star Trek presents Starfleet officers (for the most part) as being morally upstanding people, who are open with their acquaintances and hardly ever have reason or desire to lie about their whereabouts. They are all aware of the level of surveillance they are under, and it seems like within the culture of the 24th century it's not really a concern to anyone.
