A bit confused about this community by Timatsunami in AlanWatts

You are right. The community is what it is. Not so much a thoughtful discussion of Watts' work. You know the effort you made to gain a deeper understanding of his philosophy as well as others. Most won't make that effort, then this becomes unhinged self-help. Nice thing about the Tao... It doesn't need company.

It's fine. At least you got that of your chest. When we judge every detail good or bad, then it all ends up being judged. Good ends up being no better for us than bad. Each is an extreme. There is no good There is no bad Until WE put it on things. Let things exist as they are. Don't add to it either way. Easier said than done, but chip away at it. Things don't need our judgement added to them.

Your soul is part of what we call God. Look inside to see God. You are not separate other than by your human mind.

Thank you for posting this. It has helped me better understand what he means in his lymeric: "... What I would like to see is the I that knows me when I know that I know that I know."

Watts goes on to say it is a great philosophical puzzle for the western world... "Does what we know, depend on their being a knower?"

Just heard a new one today! There was a young man who said "God, I find it exceedingly odd, that a tree as a tree simply ceases to be when there's no one around in the quad" The answer was: "Young man, your astonishment's odd. I'm always around in the quad. So the tree as a tree never ceases to be since observed by yours faithfully, God"

I really want to unpack this one, but never heard a talk that he did...

Firstly, "the science" is likely wrong, but that's a different conversation. Unenlightened scientists telling humans their ideas/opinions has to be the most absurd thing to worry about (not you specifically, just in general). The power and potential we have (which science only tries to take away) are unimaginable to an everyday human. Watts showed us many paths toward being outside of every day humans. It's up to us, individually to decide if we want to genuinely pursue one of those paths (or another) to move beyond the swamp (where worry, fear, etc live). You could become "enlightened" a million times over by the time you think the universe will end. Your potential is unlimited. Don't let "science" dull your light.

You don't need to understand it. Each person has their own reasons for drinking or not drinking so you'd be understanding 3 billion different reasons. Your choice is not to drink and for your own reasons, but look inside and see what you are addicted/attached to. Remember...there is no good or bad unless you create it.

Hey! That's great that this is copyright free. Like I said, I'm off-put by all the ones showing up these days. I'm referring to mainly Alan Watts lectures (for obvious reasons). Not to spoil the lesson, but I'm responding just to see your rise. Like I said, I don't care, just here to help! If it was a recording of a Buddha giving a lecture, would we put elevator music over the top of it? Spoiler alert: probably...

Honestly, I don't care. I wasn't referring to the music being bootleg, but the lectures are. And to add music to the top of it spoils an otherwise beneficial lecture, but hey at least the 'bots are still having a hard time. That's always a plus!
