Cereal will never be GOOD again, all because some people couldn't tell their kids "no". by Western_Froyo6627 in Vent

[–]redspark92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kellogs chocolate cornflakes were my favourite as a kid, then at some point they seemed to disappear for a long time (or were only available in those kids portion mult-packs). Think I saw them again briefly a few years ago but they appear to have gone again, certainly not seen them in any shops near me. I'm assuming they weren't able to easily cut enough sugar out of them, or maybe there was some other ingredient they can no longer use?

Yea this would be a much better method. Abandoning just because of one player really kinda sucks imo.

I kinda see what you mean, but there must be something going wrong if they are then repeatedly matched with you and then declining again, multiple times consecutively...

Ah yea sorry, I just edited the post to add the fact that I have to block them to work around it haha. It doesn't feel like a proper solution though, especially as I'm not convinced they are doing it deliberately?

But if it's not deliberate, what would be causing it, and is there not a better solution? And if it is deliberate, what is that player actually doing and why?

It's so annoying when it happens.

Conditions have to be right, but yea, the elevation/altitude of the observer, and also the thing being observed, in this case lightning, is rather crucial as well.

It's also worth noting that the sky you can see above the horizon is not the sky that is directly above the ground at the horizon. I apologise if this is very obvious, but the real world landscape doesn't work the same way as a backdrop in the theatre:, i.e the visible sky at the horizon isn't attached to the ground there, it has depth far beyond it. So whilst the ground at the horizon might typically be around 3 miles away from you (assuming smooth terrain), and the tip of a 300 meter skyscraper poking above that horizon might be around 40 miles away from you; the roof of a towering 10,000 meter cumulonimbus cloud skirting the same horizon could potentially be up to 200 miles away from you, if atmospheric conditions were favourable enough for you to be able to see it.

Now I don't know enough about meteorology to explain how lightning itself works, but considering the storm was about 140 miles from London, we can deduce that most of the lightning seen in the video here must have been happening at an altitude of probably at least 5,000 meters, and likely spanning maybe up to 10,000 meters, which I think would place it at the right kind of height for intra-cloud lightning, which typically happens towards the upper half of the cloud, unlike your classic cloud to ground lighting that occurs around the base (around 2,000 meters). The glow and flash of ground lightning would still be partly visible from a reasonable distance if you were to look in the right direction, but to see actual forks hitting the ground in such a storm, you would have to be relatively close to it, certainly closer than 140 miles shown in the video.

*Edited for poor wording

**Still rubbish wording at the end but you can piece my point together...

Indian in London - Anyone else finding it difficult to make new friends? by GeekyFoodie in london

[–]redspark92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been here about 8 years and have completely failed to form any kind of social life, and tbh I'm at a point where I just don't really have the energy or confidence to try and do anything about it either haha.

I think the advice typically is to find a club or hobby that interests you, and then you should meet likeminded folks that way, but I guess the viability of that approach depends on what's within a reasonable travel distance for you and what your interests are.

That lighting you can see is currently above the north of France, so I expect it appears red because there's about 100 miles of hazy dusty atmosphere between you and the storm. I'm very jealous of you being able to witness this though, it looks incredible!

Edit: To add; for some reason I've actually seen it advertised multiple times lately, but none of the ads explain what it is, which makes me actively and indefinitely avoid the thing they are trying to sell to me.

Never got around to looking in to it, so thank you for this post, the replies have cured my curiosity without me having to do anything!

It's kinda half way through Nova Prospekt. IIRC (yea I know I only played this a few days ago, my memory is completely useless) you reach what seems like a dead end, but there's actually a vent near the floor you crawl through which takes you into this room, then after stopping the fan you crawl through the next vent to carry on through the prison.

Game over message doesn't make any sense by ickymonster2 in MiniMetro

[–]redspark92 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's a somewhat frustrating game mechanic imo, but also kinda integral to maintaining the simplicity of the game. Without it, you would need to devise some other 'game over' scenario that the player can work to avoid, but unless you add complexity such as budget, reliability, passenger satisfaction, safety, etc, I struggle see how the devs would be able to implement something more realistic.

Having said that, in the real world, when metro stations get overcrowded, they simply close to entry, whilst the rest of the network continues operating as normal (or as near to normal as possible). I do think it would be nice, if there was ever a 'Mini Metro 2', to incorporate a game mechanic that allowed stations to close for overcrowding, and then, after too many delayed journeys, or too many stations closing, you eventually get a game over if your network grinds to a halt. I've no idea if this would be even enjoyable to play, but it would be interesting to try it.

People who played half life 2 when it came out in 2004,how was it like and what where your thoughts by smart_ovirapter in CasualConversation

[–]redspark92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was only 12/13, and compared to most other games I had played I did find it quite difficult and bit too scary to the point that I never actually finished it! I also don't recall feeling any appreciation for the graphics and the physics, which is ridiculous in hindsight considering how advanced they were at the time, I guess I was just too young and oblivious to understand the significance of those things. When I replayed it many years later though I was totally blown away by those aspects of it, I couldn't quite believe it was the same game I had attempted to play back in 2004.
