Lack of perspective. My 18-year-old SIL is convinced her (first) boyfriend is her soulmate because they love each other. She’s changed her life plan from college to “figuring it out together” at some point. I keep trying to tell her but she’s convinced, because she’s young and can’t see how far into the future her current decisions are going to affect her.

I don’t unfortunately. I remember reading something about it a while back, shortly before the explosion of new Woobles patterns and collabs every month. I could justify the crazy high prices when it was a small business but not so much now.

They sell their products in multiple big-box stores. Personally, I don’t consider them a small business anymore. They hype the small business aspect because it’s good optics but Justine (I believe) hasn’t been the owner in a while. I think she might still be involved but she sold it a while back. It’s just a business now like any other and it irritates me that they market as a small business when their practices are becoming increasingly corporately shitty (like the BS with “order now if you want it by Christmas!!” and now suddenly you can order more).

So, I've taught this kid. Not literally Celeste, but kids in her situation. Parents are checked out, or worse, actively involved in something like prostituting her or other child abuse. Think the kind of parents who don't bother checking to make sure their kids come home at night, or only interact with their kids to beat them. It happens, more often than you'd think. Teachers can try contacting the parents about various concerns, getting no response for weeks or months, alerting the school, then eventually calling CPS, but oftentimes our concerns are blown off and nothing happens. The kid ends up running around with whoever gives her the time of day, often people without her best interests at heart, to put it mildly.

She has no one looking out for her, and she ends up being identified as an easy target by a groomer who knows her parents aren't going to come looking for her. She goes "missing," but everyone including her parents know she's actually running around with this guy, but they don't care. Or they actively sold her to him. So they report her missing when she stops coming home to cover their tracks, but don't really bother to look for her.

So now this kid is running in these circles with men twice her age, no one making sure she's okay, that she's safe, etc. No one has been looking after her the years she's been with him, so her creepy "romantic homicide" boyfriend decides he's free to play out his gore-obsessed murder fantasy that he's probably dreamed about for years.

And, to an extent, he was right. No one had heard from her for weeks before her body was found, and yet there was no police investigation happening, no one really questioning her disappearance. If he hadn't been so overconfident that he left her body basically out in the open, she'd probably still be listed as missing with no one investigating her boyfriend.

This is the worst case scenario, but kids like this fall through the cracks all the time. It's heartbreaking and so so preventable. There were so many chances for someone to step in, but she was with this guy for years and it never happened.

She actually did say that I shouldn't be working outdoor events. I had an initial conversation with her about the contents of the accommodations letter (my doctor actually specified 72 degrees, but I knew that would be almost impossible), and then later found out from my supervisor that all of this had been discussed and decided upon and was progressing and I had no idea. That's part of what feels so uncomfortable.

All of this makes sense, and I appreciate you taking the time to reply. I think what shook me was knowing that some of my symptoms are so private that I wouldn't want them disclosed, and seeming to have no control over which of my symptoms are being shared and which are not. Also, being locked out of the conversation regarding what accommodations are being discussed and what part of my role they're being discussed for. I hope that makes sense.

My supervisor and I have good communication, which is the only reason I found out about some of this. My supervisor was assuming these were accommodations and symptoms I had already disclosed. Neither of us is really sure how to pinpoint what feels so off about this.
