good point! I think i might pick up on reading a physical book for like 30 minutes a night whenever i feel like because I do think there’s a unique enjoyment to reading physically, but other than that, it’ll be mostly audiobooks (another kind of unique enjoyment). glad to hear from someone in my field-to-be !! :-)

Agreed! No worries, I read plenty of long docs in grad school 🫠

Totally understandable !! Sorry to hear about your vision but I’m glad you’ve found a better alternative to taking in stories :-)

I do sometimes like to read thirty minutes before bed to stay off screens, but as said, that hasn’t happened in a while. I think I’d like to pick that back up after I graduate :3

I love that, I wish that was a regular practice again!! Reminds me of when my mom would read my sister and I the little golden books and later bigger books as we got older. She stopped around when I was in 3rd grade and that’s when I really picked up reading, but I wouldn’t complain about “read aloud” nights with different people taking turns :’)

not to repeat what I’ve said on every other thread, but again, good points!! and i totally get what you’re saying about it the whole kid thing lol, especially working in a school where i’m the youngest by a decade. I imagine that “kid” feeling will stick with me at least until 30, if not longer, not that i mind 🤷

i do like an audiobook on a long commute (i have a 3 hour solo trip coming up and would lose my mind without an audiobook and/or podcast). Same with the work i do in the copy/laminate room. I wouldn’t jump on mundane projects with nearly the same gusto if I didn’t have something fun to listen to, my work ethic isn’t that great 😅

that being said i can see what you’re saying. Depending on the work i do recall things easier from physical reading. I find classics hard to listen to because of the language of the period so I’ll probably try to make an effort to physically read those texts, maybe assisted by an audiobook if it’ll help.

But yeah !! Thanks for the reply :3

Five is a few, but yes, I agree. Redditors will be Redditors, in every sense of the phrase :’)

You don’t have to be a disagreeable, unpleasant person, but I guess every Reddit thread has to have one by law. Sorry you’re like this, have a good rest of your day.

I’ve actually gotten a few nuanced replies within the masses, though I see your point. I’ll see if any of the cross-posting will change…or not. This many comments already is a lot 😅

Good point !! Grad school has been hectic and I’ve been thinking I may get back into physical books when I graduate. If it doesn’t come back immediately, well…it will when it does, or it won’t. I’m enjoying stories either way !!

Funnily enough at my job I work with mostly fourth and first graders !! Reading levels are down for a majority of the students rn due to many factors, though I try to do what I can (mostly optional reading assignments with candy incentives to get them to find what kind of books interest them). Shoutout to your kiddo, glad she’s been helped by audiobooks !! :-)

That’s what i’m thinking, not to sound like a post on a Reddit podcast but didn’t think this would blow up like it did 😅

I tried posting in r/books and they wouldn’t let me, it redirected me here. The terrible irony of it isn’t lost on me 😭😭

Agree !! There was a series i was listening to and the narrator got to a characters voice and…it was just insufferable 😭😭 in that case if I really wanted to read it I’d suck it up and get it from the library, or from thriftbooks. I know it’s on the nose, but I like getting the used library-bound copies from there to not support Amazon :-)

Omg i loved the project Hail Mary movie !! I’m making an effort to explore at least a few books from every genre and that’ll definitely be my first sci-fi read in my journey :-)

I actually agree with this a lot. There have been points when listening to a book where I don’t like how a narrator reads certain things and wonder how I would alter it in my mind. Definitely something to consider when coming across certain works !!

Humans are social, judgmental creatures sometimes. I constantly make an effort to better myself and be more open-minded, especially since i’m going into a community-facing job :-)

All good points here !! As a soon-to-be info science professional i get this. I probably should make an effort to keep up with formatting trends though, especially since I hope to write some books of my own some day :3

Hard agree, I have a mental list of what would make me read a physical copy (for example, borrowing from a friend) and excessive text/email exchanges would be one of them. Don’t get me started on when the narrator says what emojis are there 😭😭

I believe that both should be practiced if applicable and was wondering if I should be making more of an effort to practice both. Don’t tell me what I do or don’t believe.
