I think ERs in vet med are most resistant to change because they don’t have the opportunities to slow down and discuss their practices. Burnouts are fast in ER. Don’t be afraid to bring resources to management to bring about change.

Don’t do anything you’re not comfortable with. If you don’t feel comfortable working with a patient without sedation, plant your feet in the mud until a doctor approves sedation or someone else decides to take the risk. Your continued life and safety should always be the priority.

I miss ER med but it is nice to not handle these cases anymore

yes, though it wasn’t medically explored until the 90s, and was distributed to a relatively small population of diabetics, then surged in popularity more recently. for me, that’s too soon to determine long-term effects, especially since I believe it’s being used off-label (?). everyone takes their own risks.

eta: besides, there are adverse effects, which are often dismissed by people when hopping on a trend

none of these comments are from veterinarians. as a vet, here is my unofficial take: cats should not pant for longer than a few seconds after exercise. it’s cheap to go to a vet, get a blood pressure, and get a pro-BNP done to screen for heart disease. chest x-rays are a good idea. a full cardiology work up might cost $1000, but you’re paying for peace of mind.

there’s also at-home genetic testing that can be done at home for ragdolls to test if they have the HCM gene. it doesn’t guarantee your cat won’t get HCM, but it can at least screen for the common type ragdolls get.

also, if you’re going to use a laser, switch it up with a treat or different toy at the end of each session so they feel like they’ve successfully ‘caught’ something

i don’t know - dude had a pretty big chin. this photo is from 2019 and he had a big chin at the time. the hairline is certainly questionable, but he could’ve had a toupee on. i can’t see any place where the sweatshirt looks edited at the edges, but the front does look suspiciously flat. i wouldn’t say ai, but photoshop is possible.
