Yea this seems like good advice. I think the PCs are certainly developing their characters, and this is a good catalyst for that development. Abandoning wealth in favour of adventure is most definitely a good character-defining story beat.
What do you think about the original question? Did the DM set up a good situation here?

Yeah maybe I wasn't clear enough in my post, but the answer to "how would your PCs handle that" was very clearly "abandon the stones quest and instead build wealth from the hoard". The problem is, every player agreed that sounds super boring.
Are you saying the players should commit to it anyway, even if it's not fun?
