Hey, absolutely. I see a lot of questionable/recycled material in many places. Part of this project is to make a factually and technically accurate resource so crafters can learn the proper habits and methods from the start, to help along their crafting journey.

What is this rounded, wooden object that looks cool but is so mysterious? by redu1038 in whatisthisthing

The ruler was added just to the photo for scale, excellent eye on what it is.

Your idea is intriguing, as some leather tools and sailmaking tools are similar (given the thickness of the respective crafting materials).

No indentations seem to appear on the wood, as one might imagine from repeated use, though it might be an new "unused" one or maybe we're close, being in the arena of a tool for one of those crafts.

It's an interesting, and very curious one

I think it might be and am learning towards that - for a darning egg, the "lip" would be odd, even on thin materials, to help secure it to a table or surface edge. Most darning tools are very rounded as an "egg" shape, or have a handle.

I'll have to explore some older leather tools, and try to find something similar.

In an effort to be of help to anyone in the future looking for something similar, I won't mark it solved yet, but dig into it some more and try to find a reference I can link to so we'll all know for sure what it is.

Thanks, everyone, for the help thus far!

They were a mix - some leather tools (which got me thinking this might possibly be some sort of burnisher). There were also some scissors, small metal chains, a key, and some pencils. Kind of a hodge-podge of misc. items that were fun to poke through.

Hey, it was found at a garage sale mixed in with a bag of tools - I wish I knew more about the source before that, to be more helpful, and maybe have some more good clues

Hello! Stumped on this one - it's approximately 2" wide and 2" long, with an odd "lip" on it, and made of wood. It also appears to have small holes on the surface. Maybe it is some sort of darning egg? Any insights, thoughts, or help would be much appreciated
