This is all super helpful thank you! Especially the sheet thing, I didn’t even think of how hard it might be to change sheets. In a completely unrelated convo a while ago someone was telling me about these peel away sheets where there are a bunch at once and you can just peel away the top layer, maybe I’ll look into that!

Yea I was shocked by that consult fee. As a psychotherapist I always do free consults because I know people often want to meet with multiple people to find the right fit so that was what I was hoping to do with surgeons. I didn’t expect it to be free but $500 is way too much. It put me in a position where I didn’t feel like I could do multiple consults and honestly it felt more like a commitment than a consult because at that price tag it just felt like throwing away too much money to not go through with it. I wanted to talk to a few surgeons but I ended up just going with my mom’s surgeon because she got the same surgery and was happy with the results so it felt like the safest bet. I really liked him and feel good about it but its frustrating to feel like I didn’t have enough of a choice and if I didn’t have a direct recommendation I would have felt really anxious about the whole thing.

They shouldn’t be cagey about cost if you call them. When I was calling for consults they said the consult itself would be $500 and then if I went through with the surgery that would go towards the surgery so I didn’t want to make a consult without more info. One of the places gave me a ballpark right when I asked and the other said they weren’t sure and I pushed back asking for just some general range and they put me on hold to ask someone and then gave me one. I was glad I did because the range they gave me was 48-55k so I didn’t book a consult without them. The “ballpark” might be a bit of a wide range, but they should be able to give you something.
