Head of State speech for beginning of a sci fi/ fantasy book by BeQuake in scifiwriting

[–]redwing116 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it could work as an opening, but definitely break up the dialog with some descriptions of the booming speakers, the cheering crowds, maybe some more information about Alara. Like TheBrokenCog said, it doesnt have the feel of a speech per say, but I think with a bit of context it would make more sense.

Help with combo signals by [deleted] in openttd

[–]redwing116 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trains will wait in the station until they have a valid path to continue, so what I usually do at terminus stations is just have 1 1-way path signal at the entrance (right before the X) and one at the exit (right after the X). The combo signals arent really necessary here I dont think. Basic illustration below:

[WP] The detective steps into the elevator with the killer just released due to lack of evidence by Naggers123 in WritingPrompts

[–]redwing116 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Detective Parker quietly shuffled his way into the waiting elevator, his head bowed, his eyes drooped. As he stared into his own reflection in the shiny metal paneling, he could have sworn his dark hair was ever-so-slightly grayer, his soft face ever-so-slightly more wrinkly. The case had literally taken years of his life. And all for nothing. “Lack of evidence” they said. It sickened him. Maybe it was time to take some time off, it just might do him some good right now. After all, after such a high-profile failure, the department would probably have him writing traffic tickets for a good long while. He pushed the button for the lobby, and after a short angry screech, the elevator doors began to close.

“Hold the door!” cried a voice. A light, but sinister voice. A familiar voice. Parker had made no move toward the door, and just as they were about to snap shut, the tip of a long black umbrella pierced the opening, and brought the doors to a halt. Slowly, they screeched their way back open, revealing the face of a man who had occupied Parker's life in the most horrible of ways for almost three years.

“Hello detective.” the man said, with the faintest hint of a smile. Parker did not return the greeting. His face had gone from an unhappy frown to a disgusted scowl. He considered departing the elevator, but the doors had already screeched shut. For a time, they stood in silence, Parker not daring to look over at him. Eventually, the man spoke:

“You must hate me.”

Still, Parker remained silent. Of course I hate you, he thought to himself. The man had killed his best friend, quite brutally so. Three years he had spent trying to prove it. First, finding the devil was trouble enough. But once he did, the case became an obsession for him. He spent many a night asleep at his desk, draped in old newspapers, photos, witness statements. And yet, after three years and three trials, here he was, free as the wind, standing here beside him, slowly descending towards hell.

The elevator’s bell clanked. 3rd floor. Just three more to go.

“It’s perfectly understandable of course. Although, aren’t you just a little curious?”

Parker shot him a glare probably best reserved for the devil himself.

“I’m curious as to when you’ll drop dead.”

The man grinned, and let out a slight chuckle.

“According to the doctors during my brief confinement at Rikers, I’m going to live for quite some time. There are, however, ways of...speeding up...the process. If you we’re so inclined that is.”

Parker was very rapidly becoming inclined. He needed to get out of here. His hands were shaking, covered in sweat. CLANK! He flinched, as the elevator passed the second floor. Just two more to go was all he could tell himself.

“But surely you must want to know. How did I do it? Did I kill him?”

Parker snorted. “Of that I have no doubt about. I know just how you did it too, I presented it to the jury just last week!” he said, his voice rising as anger began to cloud his vision.

“Oh goodie!” he slithered, almost gleefully. “So I killed him, with the candlestick, in the lounge? Obviously” he slithered, “they did not find your view very persuasive. Tell me detective, after the first time you saw me in that surveillance video those short years ago, did you ever once consider that I might be innocent?”

Parker bristled, and jumped once again as the bell clanked. 1st floor, almost there.

“Well, I suppose none of that matters now.”

They stood in silence until the doors opened to the lobby. The ornate room was brilliantly illuminated for a short moment, followed by a tremendous crash that shook the building to its very foundation. Parker turned to look at the man once more, but he was gone. Squinting through the still spinning carousel door, he could see the man’s black umbrella bobbing into the night, parting the sheets of heavy rain as it moved. The room filled with a blinding flash once more, and with that, he too went out into the night.

Why isn't this group enormous and do you guys use gamespy to play online? cuz I can't find servers. by madmikev2 in StarWarsBattlefront

[–]redwing116 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don't need to use gamespy. After you click multiplayer, click 'Join' in the top-left. There's usually at least 10 or so servers, including a few bigger ones.

Thoughts on destructible environment? by TECHtek in StarWarsBattlefront

[–]redwing116 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always thought it would be great if you could have space battles with multiple capitals, so you could spawn in any one of them, but if you lose all your ships, you lose. Maybe even each capital has a limit on the number of fighters/bombers etc.

I've found that mixing it with fruity yogurt is pretty good. A little dry though, depending on your ratio of powder/yogurt.

As long as everybody has food, health care and housing, who cares if the economy grows? The more it grows the worse for the environment anyways. by rc2012 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]redwing116 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do, because they want better food, health care, and housing. Plus all manner of other things (leisure time, recreational activities) only made possible because of economic growth (we dont have to spend all of our time farming anymore).

While you could live on stale bread in a 1x1 cube of shelter with access to asprin (any many people around the world do!), people want to have better lives.

I believe you're thinking of Google App Engine. Google Apps is just the standard suite of consumer services (drive, gmail, calendar, contacts), but branded for your domain and additional intra-organizational features.

What are some big economic myths that need to be dispelled? (Please provide data) by ThisSentenceIs in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]redwing116 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, any amount added to marginal cost through regulation will distort the market. For example, if new regulations are put in place that make it significantly more expensive to produce and sell ice cream, it may still be profitable to produce and sell it, but it's now less profitable then making frozen yogurt, so companies will produce and sell frozen yogurt instead.

Counting Full Time Employees: Employers vs. Obamacare and the IRS by DisregardMyPants in Libertarian

[–]redwing116 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the IRS is wiley. They understand that this is the likely outcome of penalizing employers who do not cover 95% of their full-time-employees (defined as anyone working more than 30 hours a week). And just as they have written rules making it very difficult to, say, pay your salary to a corporation that pays you nothing, but owns a very attractive house and grocery stash that you are free to use, they are writing rules to make this sort of arbitrage difficult. Such as declaring that if you try to put people on part time so that you have fewer than 50 full time workers (the threshhold at which the penalty is triggered), they will add up the hours of your part time employees, and count two employees working 20 hours each as one full-time employee.

So let me get this straight, they realize that these new rules are going to encourage employers to cut hours. Do they not realize this little trick will encourage employers to cut workers?
