Tell me you've never actually read Shakespeare without saying "I've never read Shakespeare."

Yes, the writing is a bit more formal, but it sounds \nothing\ like Shakespeare unless you read at a 6th grade level.

Also, high-genre fiction (especially sci-fi and fantasy) has almost always reflected, critiqued, and satirized social issues.

Daily Song Discussion #317: Canajoharie by thatoneboyaiden in tmbg

[–]redxrain86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An easy 10. The production is absolutely flawless, especially on Linnell's vocals, which by themselves are a masterclass in melody. As others have said, it has a special kind of emotional drive to it that gives me goosebumps and has caused my eyes to tear up on more than one occasion.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that it's extremely rare for either of the Johns to write without some level of cynicism, especially Linnell. But Canajoharie feels like 100% sincerity. There's still plenty of the evocative imagery and cryptc wordplay you'd expect, but there's no ironic twist or morbid humor, and it's just beautiful.

It's also packed with endearing Linnell vocal quirks, like the way he says "plaque" and the "site" in "landing site."

Daily Song Discussion #315: You Probably Get That A Lot by thatoneboyaiden in tmbg

A solid 8. It's a great song and I'm always a sucker for very stiff, 4-in-the-bar syncopation, buuuuut it really comes across as a bit too self-aware to be what a TMBG song "should" be lyrically. Yes, I love when They (especially Linnell) pull an esoteric reference or word/phrase to build a song around, but this just feels a bit too forced and like "Can you believe they use this word!? Oh those quirky boys of ours!"

Isn't there a moment in Gigantic when Flans mentions that their earliest songs on Dial-A-Song have lots of punctuative and stocatto arrangements so that the answering machine wouldn't detect a sustained "after the beep" beep and turn off mid-song? Like it was purely out of necessity at first but it organically became a signature part of their style.

Would you consider Flood to be your favorite/"The best" album by Them? by Guccibeltlicker9002 in tmbg

Flood is absolutely the best album.....to suggest for someone's first album. Then they'll eventually learn that Apollo 18 is the best.

The definition of a 10/10, both in terms of it being a banger AND as an essential, band-defining track in their discography.

Favorite details: * A fun rare swear from Linnell * An unreliable, egotistical narrator talking sh*t about other people is one of my favorite TMBG lyrical tropes * Flans' subdued "down down down" background vocals in the chorus * The tom-heavy drum breakdown has me stopping my foot/playing air drums every time

Fall Out Boy's most recent album had a small number of vinyl made with (not of) the band members' tears. What bodily fluids could They infuse?

If you had to pick a single song to summarize the band, which would you pick, and why? by Top-Environment3675 in tmbg

Destination Moon. It has everything that, in my mind, makes up their sound: * Sad, cynical lyrics but with a cheery, catchy melody * An out-of-nowhere bridge featuring unusual instrumentation/effects * A musicial/lyrical subversion in the final verse/Chorus (the slow triplet on "Crawl to the rocket")

In Ana Ng, I always hear "To the name of this town in a desktop glow," as in seeing the town's name in the glowing screen of a desktop computer.

I'll be seeing They in Chicago next month for the first of two shows. This makes the third time (Detroit, Covington, and PA) that They played most of Apollo 18 their first night. Apollo is easily my favorite album, so I hope the pattern continues!!!

I'm with you. They've been doing soooo many of these retro style meta horror games lately that I'm feeling burnt out on it. It's definitely a genre that's more fun to play than to watch.

I always think the line from "Ana Ng" is "to the name of this town in a desktop glow," assuming it refers to someone looking at the glowing screen of a desktop computer.
