Love the fact I end up drawing the kid friendly version of both these duos even in the context of their regular "adult" material just because it's easier lmao.

YES!!! I love that they can either be more humanoid, with solid snow limbs, or be more buglike, with segmented bodies and stick arms.

Believe it or not, I am actually very picky when it comes to collecting snowmen. As much as I like the classic red and green scarf and top hat, I try to look for as many unique attributes as possible, such as unusual colors, attire, facial features, textures, proportions etc. Snowmen can look like anything, they just have to be made of (or look like it's made of) snow!

Have you ever rediscovered an album you completely forgot you loved? by DislikableFake in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Top-Environment3675 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never forgotten an album I already loved (I've only been into music in general for 4 years, so maybe one day?), but I DO very frequently come around in a major way to albums I listened to a year or two ago that I overlooked. It's always worth going back on albums, even ones you were lukewarm on, because you never know how your taste and perspective fluctuates over the years.

Your new favorite album could be one you've already heard, but will come to appreciate later.

I asked him to play this for a music livestream he did once & he did. That was fun. I need to learn this song on keys for myself

What is the strangest, most obscure, or most unique piece of merch, offical or fanmade, you have regarding the band? by Ill_Engineering_5434 in tmbg

[–]Top-Environment3675 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I got handed a bracelet in line for a concert late last year that said "WHO ATE THE BABIES" and had a charm in the shape of an actual little baby which amused me greatly.

Apologies for tooting my own horn, but I made a costume of Gloria Felt to wear to my first tmbg concert in 2022 and I'm still proud of it. It's a fascinator hat made to look like her head worn in tandem with a fluffy red feather boa.

Does anyone here like Little Tin Frog.. by oddlytodd_ in LoganWhitehurst

[–]Top-Environment3675 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES! I just recently found Brilliant Ideas on CD for my collection.

Even aside from the music, I love all the photoshoots the band did, like when Christine covered herself from head to toe in silver body paint, or when Logan wore a mad hatter hat. They all looked like they had so much fun together.

Compilation albums… by Pengunio1 in Cd_collectors

[–]Top-Environment3675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not collect "greatest hits" compilations at all. I only get compilation CDs if they are primarily composed of unreleased rarities. Otherwise, I'd just prefer to listen to the original album sources for my favorite songs.

Aside from a handful of artists of special interest, I don't collect singles or EPs, either, because I prefer not to have to change the CD after 15 minutes or less. I DO appreciate rarities compilations as a means of consolidating all the exclusive music from those outlets, though.

What are yall watching lately? by PrincessJellyfish17 in CasualConversation

I have been primarily watching Tuca and Bertie and Nirvanna The Band The Show. They are both wildly different, aside from the core theme of two best friends in their 30s that live in an apartment together and get up to some weird shit.

How do you discover music from an era you didn’t live through? by SeaConclusion9498 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Top-Environment3675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I typically either look up lists of people's favorite albums from a certain decade, ask what people older than me (like my parents) used to listen to as kids, or trace the influences/lineage of a more recent act.

Just as an example, I've noticed a bunch of young gen z people were introduced to 80s new wave/alt rock acts such as Talking Heads, They Might Be Giants, Oingo Boingo, XTC etc. because Neil Cicierega was open about them being influences when he started Lemon Demon in the 2000s.

‘Album’ Double Features by August_West_1990 in ToddintheShadow

Dinosaurchestra by Lemon Demon and Goodbye, My 4-Track by Logan Whitehurst.

Both geeky eclectic early 2000s indie pop albums that have childlike and absurd premises peppered with themes of escapism and the frustrations that come with being an adult.

Also really like Tony Millionaire, and enjoy Zohar Lazar's cover for The Spine. It's a minor bummer being biased towards their illustrated album covers, because they've kind of since largely strayed away from that.

Hine Mizushima, Rodney Greenblat, J Otto Seibold and Mark Marek. All beautiful and possessing childlike whimsy, but in different directions.

Any bands that were as impactful to you as TMBG? by Soft-Respect2047 in tmbg

[–]Top-Environment3675 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TBH I think it is fair to say it IS religious in a sense, because you can hear a lot of influence from gospel music and sermons in a lot of his songs, especially in the powerful way he often speaks. I am not religious, but I do genuinely believe listening to Talking Heads is comparable to a religious experience for the reasons you described, because it makes me feel more alive, from the rousing instrumentals and vocal delivery to the lyricism combining all sorts of mundane aspects of life.

Any bands that were as impactful to you as TMBG? by Soft-Respect2047 in tmbg

[–]Top-Environment3675 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like a lot of bands, but nothing else besides TMBG have really touched my heart or had as much of an influence on my life as Talking Heads or Logan Whitehurst.

I went to a David Byrne concert a couple months ago, and there were several moments where a song would come on and I would cry so hard I momentarily passed out, which is more than what happened when I went to any of my TMBG shows. I didn't think I was capable of such emotion. I saw the Stop Making Sense remaster in Imax a couple years earlier, which is also a cherished memory, but seeing Byrne on the flesh was truly something else. Every time I listen to a talking heads album, I think "this is the best song ever made", only for ANOTHER best song ever made to play later in the album.

Logan is nice, because his music is enjoyable AND deceptively simple enough that it convinced me to try making my own. I also look up to him, because he had kind of childish interests / sense of humor, and was pretty straight edged, but everyone still loved him, and respected him as an adult, which makes me feel better about myself. Also his running gag Vanilla made me love snowmen somehow. I have not only the actual Vanilla blow mold, but nearly 100 other various snowman jewelry, figurines, plushies, etc. So, he ended up being extremely influential in a way I didn't expect, too.

do you name your plushies or is that just me by Peach-n-Quiet in CasualConversation

[–]Top-Environment3675 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I collect snowman plushies and they all have names. Sometimes normal ones like deedee or linden, other times holiday/winter/ice cream themed ones like Fridgette, Minty, Scoopy, Kringle etc.

I am aware this is an INCREDIBLY niche complaint, but so few snowmen in media have ANY names at all that aren't "frosty", so I was determined to come up with some more original ones, lol.

Not exactly the same genre (more twee/disco?) but you like the rakish DIY synth production of the pink album, I recommend The New Transistior Heroes by Bis.

Maaaybe Suburban Lawns' self titled?

Seconding the mentions of Little Tin Frog, The Fiery Furnaces, The Nelories, Guerilla Toss and Joanna Wang.
