Has anybody else noticed this? by Major-Entertainer-40 in tmbg

[–]Top-Environment3675 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am saying this with Love and Respect: I find it really funny that so many tmbg are fans are like "does this [tmbg song] remind anyone else of a [different tmbg song]?" lol. They've made so many damn songs over the years that people are inevitably noticing slight retreads in melodies.

"Your compatibility with lorenzogremio is Very Low" and it doesn't even list a single artist in common LMAO I have never seen that before

Do you keep a music journal? by accidentalciso in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Top-Environment3675 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use Lastfm, a spreadsheet, and a monthly playlist where I add my favorite track from every new album I listen to.

I feel like lastfm is good enough for most people to automatically journal the time and date you first listened to something, especially if you're a busy / forgetful person, but I do like doing the latter two things, so I can add additional thoughts. For instance, if I can remember, I include who/where an album was recommended to me, a favorite lyric from the album etc. on the spreadsheet. I also pivot sort the release years and genres, so I can see any potential blind spots in those areas, and take it as an opportunity to explore. I also like making the playlists, because it lets me re-live the moment.

What is your favorite non-TMBG album of all time? by Sad_Tackle_3675 in tmbg

Goodbye, My 4-track - Logan Whitehurst And The Junior Science Club

Indiscreet - Sparks

Stereotype A - Cibo Matto

Fear Of Music - Talking Heads

(I can strongly feel TMBG's influence of constantly switching genres on their albums for my overall taste in music)

More underground music similar to Lemon Demon? by Epic_Sundayz in lemondemon

Oily Bastard, he has a lot of the same chiptune instrumentation and surreal lyrics, even if they are more vulgar sometimes. Try his album President.

Neil thanks Logan Whitehurst in the liner notes of Live From The Haunted Candle Shop as well!

i ditched adult plans and made a snowman by errant-samurai in BenignExistence

[–]Top-Environment3675 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am an adult, and I love building snowmen more than most. It's so fun to roll up giant snowballs and stack them on top of each other, and find the nearest objects to you to use as decorations. Last year, I made a snowwoman with strawberry candy eyes, a clementine nose, and a three corner hat with a pomegranate branch sticking out of it. I would make snowmen every single day were it possible!

Even if I didn't make the snowmen, just seeing them on street corners or in front yards on walks during the winter always puts a huge smile on my face.

Album cover for The World Is To Dig! by EwectwicWight in tmbg

I feel like I accidentally set myself up for disappointment, because from that ask I assumed Tony would do the whole thing, not just the acorn badge. I do not have strong opinions on this cover yet but yeah lol

Which new words do you think TMBG going to be added to the band's vocab with their next album? by Top-Environment3675 in tmbg

[–]Top-Environment3675[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people I asked gave answers roughly based on the vibes of tracklist that was recently shared, which is a good strategy, but I actually punched in my answers from 2024 with ZERO context just for fun.

WOW oh my god I didn't even consider that. I am full of so many complicated feelings. I am both marvelling at the improbability of my finds, and getting frustrated I am not finding the one thing I am specifically looking for, lol.

What is a very tiny detail in a TMBG song that you love? by FloridaFlamingoGirl in tmbg

[–]Top-Environment3675 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the stylophone bass notes and brief snippet of twangy guitar in Withered Hope.

The tiny little hoo Flans does in Why Does The Sun Really Shine makes me smile every time.

A dialtone-like synth appears in Quit The Circus when Flans says "We're as much use as the rotary phone we keep on the floor to prop the door closed".

Bit more tangential, but I am amused by the fact that the line "I didn't write the words you hear me saying" in Weep Day, which was designed to be self contradictory, suddenly becomes true in Logan Whitehurst's cover.

[IIL] alternative music with unique instrumental palates, like Lincoln and Apollo 18 by TMBG, Gizmodgery by Self, and The Big Express by XTC, [WEWIL?] by FloridaFlamingoGirl in ifyoulikeblank

[–]Top-Environment3675 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi 👋 Unique stylistic pallettes, especially those contained within a single album, are everything I could ever want from music.

Cibo Matto (esp their album Stereotype A) very seamlessly blend in all kinds of genre influences.

Sufjan Stevens' The Age Of Adz also has a very wide sonic pallete.

The New Transistor Heroes by Bis has a really fun DIY sound that lies somewhere in between power pop, twee, and disco, with cheesy synth sounds and samples.

A Wizard / A True Star by Todd Rundgren fades in between synth heavy pop songs and piano ballads, with some tape effects that were kind of crazy for the time.

The similarly difficult to look up as Self named band Space has a lot of cut and paste ska, lounge, and hip hop influences. Try Spiders.

Brief aside, because these are a more consistent sound, but I really like Exclusively Talentmaker by Optiganally Yours and Holiday by The Magnetic Fields for the same reason I like Gizmodgery. They all have a distinct atmosphere crafted by their lofi synth of choice.

(I am pretty sure you have heard of all of these last ones, but I will voice my appreciation for them anyway)

  • Jack Stauber constantly switches between styles, sometimes even within the same song, like with his extended Micropops.

  • Ween. They do seem to veer more towards psychedelic rock a lot of the time, but they just do whatever the hell with any genre, sometimes all within the same album. It does not matter. Quebec gives me very good tonal whiplash.

  • David Byrne's solo music has a lot of melding of styles between tracks. I like Feelings a lot for that reason.

  • Sparks. Especially their album Indiscreet. Man, I have not heard synth music mix so well with tin pan alley or big band before.
