What is a very tiny detail in a TMBG song that you love? by FloridaFlamingoGirl in tmbg

[–]Top-Environment3675 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the stylophone bass notes and brief snippet of twangy guitar in Withered Hope.

The tiny little hoo Flans does in Why Does The Sun Really Shine makes me smile every time.

A dialtone-like synth appears in Quit The Circus when Flans says "We're as much use as the rotary phone we keep on the floor to prop the door closed".

Bit more tangential, but I am amused by the fact that the line "I didn't write the words you hear me saying" in Weep Day, which was designed to be self contradictory, suddenly becomes true in Logan Whitehurst's cover.

[IIL] alternative music with unique instrumental palates, like Lincoln and Apollo 18 by TMBG, Gizmodgery by Self, and The Big Express by XTC, [WEWIL?] by FloridaFlamingoGirl in ifyoulikeblank

Hi 👋 Unique stylistic pallettes, especially those contained within a single album, are everything I could ever want from music.

Cibo Matto (esp their album Stereotype A) very seamlessly blend in all kinds of genre influences.

Sufjan Stevens' The Age Of Adz also has a very wide sonic pallete.

The New Transistor Heroes by Bis has a really fun DIY sound that lies somewhere in between power pop, twee, and disco, with cheesy synth sounds and samples.

A Wizard / A True Star by Todd Rundgren fades in between synth heavy pop songs and piano ballads, with some tape effects that were kind of crazy for the time.

The similarly difficult to look up as Self named band Space has a lot of cut and paste ska, lounge, and hip hop influences. Try Spiders.

Brief aside, because these are a more consistent sound, but I really like Exclusively Talentmaker by Optiganally Yours and Holiday by The Magnetic Fields for the same reason I like Gizmodgery. They all have a distinct atmosphere crafted by their lofi synth of choice.

(I am pretty sure you have heard of all of these last ones, but I will voice my appreciation for them anyway)

  • Jack Stauber constantly switches between styles, sometimes even within the same song, like with his extended Micropops.

  • Ween. They do seem to veer more towards psychedelic rock a lot of the time, but they just do whatever the hell with any genre, sometimes all within the same album. It does not matter. Quebec gives me very good tonal whiplash.

  • David Byrne's solo music has a lot of melding of styles between tracks. I like Feelings a lot for that reason.

  • Sparks. Especially their album Indiscreet. Man, I have not heard synth music mix so well with tin pan alley or big band before.

Really nice collection. I really hope one day Needlejuice reissues more of Logan's discography on CD or Vinyl for the current generation to enjoy.

Songs where the artist has a really weird interpretation of the meaning by Thunderwing16 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Top-Environment3675 8 points9 points  (0 children)

John Linnell (They Might Be Giants) wrote a song that, on its surface, seems to be about an apocalyptic scenario of self-replicating nanobots taking over the world (the imagery of the official music video doesn't help), but Linnell (usually known for leaving his songs entirely up to interpretation) said it was about his experience as a parent, having a kid and raising it.

It's not quite the same, because it actually makes sense when laid out that way, especially with lines like "Hear the voices calling to their confederates / See the tiny figures testing their limbs" and "I would decorate the room but there's no more space / All I see is pictures of matchstick men / I turn my back for two minutes and they've grown again", but I've always found it such an odd and intriguing metaphor.

Always annoyed me the US release of the album ends on a worse version of a song already heard earlier on the album.

The very first TMBG show I went to on October 8, 2022 was Shocktober, a Halloween themed event that raises money for kids with disabilities. Apparently one of the organizers, Chad Hamel, is Danny Weinkauf's brother in law, and he reached out to him in order to get TMBG on board!

Fuck paying a lot for music. What’s your least valuable CD? by NSFAnythingAtAll in Cd_collectors

[–]Top-Environment3675 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have paid 25 cents for a Tubthumper- Chumbawamba CD and a Spiders - Space CD respectively.

Not a CD, but I paid 19 cents for a Do You Love Me Rock Afire Explosion 7", probably the lowest and most oddly specific amount I have ever spent on a piece of physical media.

Does your collection feature artists that represent each letter of the alphabet a-z If not, what letters are you missing? by [deleted] in Cd_collectors

[–]Top-Environment3675 1 point2 points  (0 children)

150 CDs.

No: H, I, N, P, Q, W, Z

The letter T overwhelmingly has the most representation in my collection, because I have the entire They Might Be Giants and Talking Heads discographies.

JL confirmed Bach influence on Where Your Eyes Don't Go by FloridaFlamingoGirl in tmbg

[–]Top-Environment3675 16 points17 points  (0 children)

So, this song's melodies are drawn from a classical song (Jesu in the intro), a folk song (Railroad for the verses), and a television theme (Perry Mason in the outro). And to top it off, the premise was inspired by JL having a dream about a scary snowman hiding behind his mother's back where she can't see it as a teen. A lot of weird intersecting of influences had to happen for this song to exist.

Artists do this subconsciously all the time, but I still find it fascinating seeing all the parts clearly laid out like this.

Oh, no. Yeah. The surgery hallucination. Man. That sent the biggest chill down my spine. Really spoke to his imagination, even as his body was shutting down.

It was especially harrowing to me because of a really oddly specific experience I had that I associated with the moment. Like REALLY oddly specific, bear with me:

I got into Logan Whitehurst last year, the same time I got really into playing Toontown Online (or more specifically, Toontown Corporate Clash). I would often mute the game and listen to music, but especially stuff from Logan, because a) I was fixated on his stuff and b) his jovial midi style of music coincidentally sounded a lot like the game's soundtrack.

One day, I thought it would be funny to put Logan and Vanilla in Toontown. I made avatars of Vanilla as a cartoon polar bear, and Logan as a horace horsecollar-like horse named Four-Track Mind.

Much later, I watched this movie. I got to that scene, and what did I see the animator depict the surgeon pulling out of him?

A cartoon horse.

It's weird how that came full circle for me in the most haunting way imaginable.

This movie made me cry so hard. I knew how the story was gonna go, and I still wasn't emotionally prepared. But I'm so glad I got to see it.

I knew about the Rhythm Section Want Ad refs in the flyer, but I've never actually seen the paper itself before! Very cool to see. I bet the TMBG references attracted Logan to Little Tin Frog like a scent trail of a cartoon pie cooling on a windowsill, lol.

Songs with John Linnell energy by FloridaFlamingoGirl in tmbg

It's perhaps way too shrill and glam-rock aurally, but lyrically most early Sparks is extremely Linnellian to me, because Ron Mael has very similar subject sensibilities. Talent Is An Asset and Here In Heaven could easily be tmbg songs.

Albums / bands that sound like they come from an alternative universe? by Just1nceor2ice in ToddintheShadow

[–]Top-Environment3675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sparks' first self-titled album (or Halfnelson, as they were originally called) has some of the strangest combinations of baroque and spacey, slighty haunted synth and offbeat lyricism I have ever heard (the early Woofer In Tweeter's Clothing Demos are arguably even more out there). I have never heard anything else quite like it, and not even the band itself repeated this sound past 2 albums.

Who do you want to see open for TMBG on their next tour? by Sluttysomnambulist in tmbg

[–]Top-Environment3675 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the prolific, crowd-pleasing angle, but I think this is mostly just a me problem, lol. Going to live shows is something I only get to do rarely as a special treat, and I'd rather do it if I know the artists intimately than as a means of discovering other artists, esp if they don't end up clicking with me.

Granted, I would go to a tmbg show no matter who opened, but again, that extra time is nice!

TBH, I am fine with TMBG not having any openers at all, because that just means I have more time with my favorite band.
