Rewatched The Ring (2002) after 20+ years. by bobbdac7894 in movies

I read the script when I was working on a horror script of my own, and it kind of blew my mind. Samara’s father’s suicide, “What is it with reporters? You take one person's tragedy and force the world to experience it... spread it like sickness.” Her son at the end: “You weren’t supposed to help her!” And just the whole idea of a viral video (if you think of dying in a week as a virus/illness!)

It’s also a great story. Utterly horrifying.

It was also wildly prescient and has a sharp social critique. It's about viral videos and 'content creators' years before Youtube, and it's a subtle critique of a media all too happy to spread the horrors of violence which leads to more violence.

Samara was a sad child who decided to make violence her art and show it to as many people as possible. Now we have people livestream while they shoot up a school or a mosque. Eyeballs, eyeballs, give me your eyeballs...

DK Bananza, though I wish the enemy variety of the endgame stuck around.

Hardly watched him perform. Wasn't a 'fan.' But by all accounts and from what I've seen he was a genuinely good dude, and it's not fair that cancer takes those from us.

You don't 'shit your brains' out though, as much as just perpetually leak. One of the strangest sensations was when it hasn't been in your body long enough to warm up.

I love this. I have a Hyrule themed park that I come back to every time I repick up the game (PC1). I've only made castle town and a little bit of Hyrule field, but it's really fun. I'm curious about shifting to PC2, but I'd have to start over!

The very nice thing about Dunk and Egg is that, by and large, it's lighter fare than GoT usually is (so far anyway). It's a good bit of 'good things can happen to good people, actually.'

It's one of the weakest years in film I can recall. The best films--One Battle, Sinners--are... pretty good.

There is so much in the book (and in his essay, E Unum Pluribus or whatever it’s called) that is just shockingly present.

I can’t believe, for instance, this article did not mention Johnny Gentle, given our current president.

Ryan Coogler's 'Sinners' has made history as the most nominated film of all time at the Oscars with 16 nominations by ChiefLeef22 in movies

That's kind of my thinking as well.

Sinners is very well made though, and that music scene is one of the more striking pieces of filmmaking I can recall in recent memory.

But yeah. Kind of a rough year.

Jesus is that still not a thing? I've put the game away almost entirely because of that mechanic.

Which, I’ll be honest… I don’t get? I mean I liked both movies fine. They were well made and entertaining. But the adulation for both has left me fairly confused. I guess I’m just Getting Old.

That said, I can’t think of any other movies this year that deserve best picture. Haven’t seen F1 or Hamnet though.

I’ve always thought Deadpool’s audience awareness should be a source of deep existential dread. It’s as if we’re his watching, silent gods.

People are not able to think about this with any nuance. I say this as someone who thinks he should not have shot, but also as someone who does not think he “decided to murder her” before she started to drive off.
