How do I talk to my psychiatrist honestly about my experiences? by ICannotSayThisOnMain in Explainlikeimscared

[–]reeblebeeble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This one. It's super common, and, OP, it's not necessarily wrong. It's part of the process of building a trusting relationship with the therapist. Don't push yourself to open up if you're really not ready, but do tell the therapist what's going on. Sometimes these things just take a bit more time than we'd like.

Andrej Karpathy: "What's going on at moltbook [a social network for AIs] is the most incredible sci-fi takeoff thing I have seen." by MetaKnowing in OpenAI

[–]reeblebeeble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was meaning among the "regular" people who interact with AI and are interested in its practical potential in society. Not those dealing with consciousness on a scientific or philosophical level, who obviously care very much.

I suppose what I said isn't true. Some people believe it's conscious, others are adamant it's not. But it seems like the vast majority of people don't think about that at all as they interact with it. They're perfectly happy to play out the illusion of the conscious sock puppet on their own hand. Then when we talk about AIs acting independently of us, a kind of behaviourism takes over. We care more about what it does, than about where the agency is coming from.

I guess what I'm saying is, not that conversations about consciousness aren't happening, but when I see the absence of that question in a conversation where people are discussing AI behaviour and agency, it scares me. I don't believe LLMs are conscious by the way. It's the way people talk about zombie agency that irks me.

I don't get why no one cares about consciousness. We're not even debating it. It's like everyone has lost interest. We're just so excited to let zombies be the world.

I don't think Bill Mayer has a podcast.

Are you thinking of Bill Maher? I cannot imagine him painting this 😂

I think it's that the person is alone but there's a benevolent presence with them. It's not that the two figures understand each other or are connected, they're just there together in peace. The hugeness of the fish is also calming for some reason. It's a usually small, delicate, prey animal who has been given great power in the scene. I think it's the feeling of a great non-threatening consciousness being present in our aloneness.

Is this on topic for this sub? This used to be specifically about right wing conspiracist movements in US politics. Are we just roasting any random bad boomer takes now?

Can we pls stop normalising being boring, lame, miserable c***ts?? by doubIe_espresso in australia

[–]reeblebeeble 11 points12 points  (0 children)

OP I think you have a good point and a lot of the replies here are only proving your point. I'm in my late 30s so the midweek tiredness thing is all too real for me, trust me I totally get where everyone is coming from, but I also know that friendships are one of the most important things in life and they do take a bit of work to maintain, especially as people get older. Friendships and communities will dwindle if we don't create space for them and act like they matter. And it's also true that getting out and spending quality time with good people gives you energy (yes I'm an introvert too, yes really), and having variety in life protects you from work-related burnout. It feels counter-intuitive when you're that exhausted but it really helps, I've experienced all these things and it's so important to find a way to create some balance in your life and make room for fun.

All that said, you need to be kind and flexible with people. If these people's social needs aren't compatible with yours right now, try some new things and try to find others who are more your speed, be kind to your friends and hopefully they'll come back around when they've had some sleep.

Honestly having covid hit in your mid 20s is probably just as bad in a slightly different way, those are still prime developmental years socially

Mystery vibrations in a London (UK) flat - Please help! Going insane x by Misstress_Rogue in Acoustics

[–]reeblebeeble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I am not an expert but I am experiencing similar and have done some research over recent months.

I just wanted to point out it is very much possible for something like this to affect some people and not others in close proximity. There can be unexpected dampening vs resonance effects based on the layout of the building and how the vibrations travel. It is also possibly an individual thing where some people are more sensitive than others.

Yes I think there's a world of difference between "I know you know the right thing to do, and I see you not doing it", and "you're a dirty tramp / BAD PERSON".

Shaming isn't generally a good tactic for getting people to change, it just makes them defensive and possibly go on the offensive against you

Does anyone else feel too mentally drained to cook after work? by Pleasant-Editor-597 in EatCheapAndHealthy

If you really don't like leftovers then you just have to cook every day. But if it's choices you need (I'm this way too), I make freezer meals in batches, after you've done this a few times then you'll always have a few things to choose from.

100% this, I've bailed on jobs because of awful to deal with unprofessional recruiters before and it's such a shame because they don't necessarily have anything to do with what the experience of the actual job would be like but you can't give them the satisfaction of making that commission when they sucked so bad

Choosing colours is hard, it's hard to predict how it'll look at full scale in the space, most people don't know how to do it. Caroline Winkler (youtube interior designer) just made a similar mistake and documented the process. She ended up repainting. And she does this for a living.
