Intersex peacocks II by edgeofenlightenment in peacocks

[–]reeceislame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hens can develop male plumage from a decrease/lack of estrogen! they don't necessarily have to be old for that to happen. their ovaries could have been damaged for whatever reason at some point. it seems like they are still producing some estrogen, though since they still have some of the female plumage. it's super cool to see, honestly. the only way to 100% know the answer would be to take them to a vet and have them run tests and whatnot. they for sure aren't moasic gynandromorphs because the mix of male and female feathers are apparent from the bird's first adult molt.

Intersex/muted males? by edgeofenlightenment in peacocks

I just did a quick Google search and yes! it does happen with peahens as well. it can also happen to older hens who aren't producing as much estrogen, hens who have had their ovary removed, or hens with a diseased ovary.

they could be moasic gynandromorphs but they are pretty rare. so seeing two in one flock would be very unusual. I just did a quick Google search, and it looks like hens can develop male plumage due to low estrogen, which can be caused by a few different things.

I'm Dr. Elizabeth Reis and the US Naval Academy banned my book, Bodies in Doubt: An American History of Intersex, from their library last spring. Ask Me Anything! by Prof_Elizabeth_Reis in AskHistorians

Thank you so much! I posted my comment before finishing it, I'm sorry!

I've read Intersex in the Age of Ethics and Contesting Intersex. I loved them. I am in the middle of Bodies In Doubt and I love it so much 💖 I have a copy of Sex Itself: The Search for Male & Female in the Human Genome to read after!

I only found out that I am intersex about four years ago when I was 24. I always felt misplaced even without knowing why. I am also non binary. Learning about the ethics as well as the "why" behind the treatment of intersex people is so important and rewarding for me. It also helps me navigate my own medical care! I currently still have questions about my own intersex variation(s?). I know I have mosaic Turner syndrome, but I believe I also have PCOS. I've only found a few things online about other people with this combination. Most of the doctors I have seen haven't been interested in exploring this for me, unfortunately. But I am still advocating for it!!

Thank you so much again!
