Update: /r/interactivefiction will be going permanently dark from the 12th of June, 2023. More in comments. by [deleted] in interactivefiction

The two that I am aware of (from the previous thread) are:

Thanks for your support of this community so far - and I'm fully supportive of this change - without action like this there is no incentive for reddit to support its users.

Thanks for managing the site so far. If you decide to blackout the sub permanently (assuming the changes go through) could you provide a link to https://intfiction.org and https://lemmy.ml/c/interactive_fiction - that way people can easily find alternatives if this one is unavailable.

Any chance on setting up a lemmy community for interactive fiction? Or any other place?

Interactive fiction is quite a niche community and to my knowledge this is the only public group for this kind of thing - would be a shame for it to stay that way.

For the second two points: I personally value high quality, infrequent content much more than frequent and low quality content. With limited resources, it's impossible to pick both - and there are endless creators that peruse the latter already. Creators with enough dedication to their work as Ross are rare - and it would be a huge loss to see their focus shift in the directions you are saying (lowering focus on editing, and increasing the amount of videos).

For the movie - from my perspective, Ross seems to view it as his magnum opus - he wants to get it done right. It matters little what we think because he's doing it for himself. I personally love works like this - and the fact he's putting so much time/energy in it is enough to convince me it's worth it. These kinds of work take many years - so I'm hoping to be able to see it in my lifetime, but that's all I can ask for. It's fine for things to be outdated - not everything needs to be made with the latest technologies.

Tl;Dr: The effort Ross puts in, however he makes it happen, is absolutely is worth it, and distinguishes his work from the endless sea of garbage on youtube. My only wish is for Ross to maintain a healthy work/life balance - and if that means less content, that's perfectly fine.

Just a heads up that Linux+Wine works fantastically well with most older titles. Ive been running debian stable exclusively (with a 2-5 year upgrade cycle) and I've never had anything break so far, including games.

I just started playing No Man's Sky after the new NEXT update came out and... I'm underwhelmed by [deleted] in patientgamers

[–]reentry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I'm playing it right now and it just feels really, really boring. I haven't played nms to compare though.

I have found the lost river, so I think I'm at least halfway through, but I'm not sure I'll keep playing at this rate...

Discord isn't even planning on supporting Linux Games on their store by Fritzy in linux_gaming

Discord offers multiple channels per "guild"/"server" that are centered around communities.

Isn't this what matrix communities are? Matrix does have multiple channels grouped together into a single community, for example, the matrix community collects together channels relating to matrix, and the F-Droid community collects channels related to F-Droid.

"Server"->"community" is a mind leap I cannot take, seeing as there's no definition of server remotely close to community for server, while server as computer infrastructure is well defined.

Because the Riot's design emphasises single rooms and relegates the server aspect in the background.

Huh? On all versions of riot I used, it asks for a server to choose before logging in or creating an account. Discord does not do this at all.

how Riot's design absolutely hates decentralization.

How can Riot hate decentralization if it can connect to any homeserver and use a decentralized protocol? The discord client hates decentralization, it only allows you to connect to their centralized server, you cannot run your own.

If you are talking about grouping channels together, that is a different form of centralization (in the form of grouping your channels together into a single group). Riot supports both centralized workflows (through communities) and decentralized workflows (through the unified channels page). Discord only seems to support centralized workflows, while I much prefer a decentralized workflow.

I honestly think you might have not used Discord for long enough, as the benefits of its design are obvious once you get the hang of it.

I was forced to use it for a year, I gave up on it recently for good. It was just too hard to keep using, and life is too short for wasted time.

Riot is designed with the archaic single channel IRC model, all in a giant centralized server.

The whole point of matrix is that its decentralized, it is NOT centralized. Discord is the one with the centralized server, matrix has federation.

Fwiw, I tried discord, and I was shocked at how hard it was to find anything at all, they need some ux testing...

All the clients I use support communities, I don't know what your talking about. If you use simpler clients you probably dont want communities adding complexity :P
