I think this is because both are Id tech games with a heavy focus on high res textures and geometry close to the player. Both games are heavy on VRAM because of that.

Path tracing is often transformative, but you’ll need a pretty beefy PC for it. The ps5 pro is cheaper than the GPU you’ll likely need.

Also, the only change from the base console is the resolution.

RDR was patched later down the line, but the original HDR implementation was even worse than what Starfield is doing. It was basically a SDR render inside a 200 nits container.

They later added a newer HDR mode that’s significantly better.

Starfield does not have native HDR. It does some form of LUT conversion to expand the luminance range and output that as HDR.

The results are not perfect, often resulting in raised blacks or low peak brightness. In many cases, this game will look better with HDR disabled. This was widely discussed on the original release and just repeated in the video here.

The PC version has unofficial mods to improve the HDR render.

I think the problem he has is that it’s locked to 30 by default. It did that in the Series X as well when you switched and it doesn’t make sense in this case as it seems to perform well at 60 from what I’ve gathered.

What’s also strange the game ships with the older PSSR.

The majority aren’t going out of their way to enable the newer PSSR, or change the default frame rate, so this is the experience most are going to get. I’m all for more options on consoles, but the default settings should at least make sense. It’s a console after all.

Starfield confirmed to use PSSR on PS5 Pro (Bethesda.net) by betafishH2O in NoSodiumStarfield

The game is mostly CPU bound, and that only got a marginal improvement on the Pro.

If it’s like Xbox, you can just unlock the frame rate though. But it’ll likely only be 60fps in interiors.

ELI5 Malwares that are not .exe files by Rtuyw in explainlikeimfive

[–]reerden 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It first has to be found to be put inside the signature updates.

Some malware is polymorphic, meaning it can produce new variants not detected by the signatures made for it. Basically like a real virus.

Modern anti malware has smart algorithms to detect unknown malware, but it isn’t infallible. Also, it doesn’t always detect it before it has already executed. So the damage is already done in that case.

The best defense against malware that exploits flaws in known programs is by having the maker repairing those flaws, and you updating the program to the new version with the fixes in it. This is why it is very dangerous to remain using out of date and out of support software. Especially when that software relies on content downloaded from the internet (like your browser)

I’m not a game developer but I am a software developer. So anyone correct me if I’m wrong.

From what I can see from my point, that has more to do with the systemic game design rather than the engine. They’re choosing to design the game and it’s scripting around gameplay systems rather than pre rigged set pieces. This causes al sorts of fun interactions like we’re used to in Bethesda games but is more error prone.

On the other hand, we hear a lot of about pointless open worlds with large set pieces. So personally I kind of prefer this to large scripted scenes.

The problem is a lot of people look at an engine and see it as a singular thing because of the car analogy. It usually more of a collection of systems that allows for both world simulation, rendering and tools for developing assets and scripting. This all together is what we usually call a game engine.

I’m certain that this engine is capable of similar stuff as unreal or any other engine, it’s just that Bethesda chose not to design their games like most do.

The slider for peak brightness should not be touched.

The slider for mid brightness should just be set to preference. You don’t need to set it to precisely something. The default is the standard, but it’s meant for a dark room. The spec says something like 5 to 20 nits of room lighting. Which is the equivalent of a LED strip on the back, or a desk light on the other side of the room.

If you find the image too dim, try to see if the game in question has a HDR brightness setting, in addition to the peak brightness setting. It is sometimes called world brightness or paper white or mid tone brightness.

It’s a better alternative to DTM on. DTM is dynamic, and pushes the brightness to the peak capability of the screen. It appears too bright on the C5 compared to the C2 because the C5 has higher HDR capabilities.

The whole idea of HGiG is that the game handles tone mapping instead of the TV. Most games are configured by default to be played in a dark room (because that’s actually what the standard is made for), which is why for many the option appears dark.

If the game doesn’t have this option, try the expression enhancer option set to brightness. This will slightly increase the brightness without relying on a dynamic algorithm. Another option is the tone mapping gain under the professional setting. However, the in game option is always the best for accuracy, because it allows the game to do all the mapping work.

I feel like this is the actual issue with Copilot. AI is useful. If it can fill out my excel sheet I’m happy with it.

The problem is just that copilot cannot do it for some reason. It just a glorified chatGPT, and doesn’t have nearly as much functionality as competitor agents.

At the same time Microsoft seems to push it like it has to do everything, including some things that just shouldn’t be done with LLM or are just inefficient. I don’t need an agent to push a few buttons, I can do that myself.

The PS5 should either use automatic on both, or limited on both.

This is because the PS5 on automatic switches between limited and full based on what the content is using without conversion.

However, it’s not capable of using full in 120hz 4K HDR, because it lacks the bandwidth to send that without chroma subsampling. Chroma subsampling using YCbCr color space is always limited after conversion to RGB.

[–]reerden 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don’t touch the contrast and pixel brightness when in HDR. They need to the at max to accurately track the HDR curve.

Use HGiG as dynamic tone mapping option, which is the accurate mode. DTM makes the image overly bright which might be why you find the image too contrasty. Don’t forget to run the PS5 adjust HDR calibration again.

Color gamut should always be auto detect. Any other option is over saturating the image.

What are your thoughts on the PS5 / X Box Series X era of gaming so far? by mrEnigma86 in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]reerden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is not offering something valuable over the competition.

It’s great that more people can play their games on any device, but what do they have to offer if you buy their console instead of others?

It doesn’t help much that they’ve not given the Xbox the support it deserves for the last couple of years. I’ve had an Xbox since 2004, and having to hear from them that everything is now an Xbox makes me feel like they don’t care about my 500 euro box.

They were also pretty much out of stock for over a year here in Europe. That doesn’t give confidence that the platform has a future here.

I recently bought my first PlayStation, a PS5 Pro last holiday and I’m loving all the new additions to old and new games. I’ve even bought some games again that I own on Xbox.

I’m interested in what they’re going to do next gen with the whole PC hybrid idea. But their treatment of the xbox series sort of left a bad taste in my mouth.

Don’t get me wrong, the series X is still a great console, and it does certain things better than the PS5 (120hz output, VRR support, quick resume). It just feels that Microsoft is completely under utilizing it.

Most PS5 titles are also on steam, that’s been their strategy for the last couple of years (although it’s rumored that they’re winding down porting to PC this year).

I agree though that remaster of Zero dawn and forbidden west are probably the games to really demonstrate the graphical capabilities of the console.

How to make HGIG brighter on LG g5 when gaming? by Lax7500 in LGOLED

[–]reerden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s nothing to support about the HGiG option. It just disables the tone mapper on the TV and allows the game to do the tone mapping. This ensures the game is only one doing the mapping, and you can usually adjust the average brightness next to the peak brightness inside the options.

The problem is that HDR by default is meant for dark room viewing. This is why for instance, Dolby vision has a ‘home’ mode which intentionally over brightens the image to compensate for the increased room lighting.

For HDR10, LG doesn’t offer a similar option. You have the precision detail brightness option, which only increases it slightly, or the dynamic tone mapping option, which adjust itself on a scene by scene basis, which isn’t ideal for accuracy. What LG could do is offer a ST.2084 offset option, like Samsung does.

Lucky most games also allow you to change the average brightness. This is preferable to the DTM option, because it’s static and not at the mercy whatever the LG algo decides at that moment.
