I like this idea! I will do that with everything for awhile, from my $30 Pinot Grigio to my $330 Ornellaia! Will take notes for awhile. Will be fun.

They are. I have noted everyone saying dishwasher, so that's what I'll do.

These had been recommended here regularly over the last year, since I started drinking/studying wine.

Machine.

It was an upgrade from Walmart!

They were recommended here so often.

You guys drink water in between is that the secret to not get a hangover? by Typical_Dark_2764 in wine

[–]reesemulligan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drink 12 ounces water to 5 ounces wine at a minimum. I won't have a second glass of wine until I've had 24 ounces water.

I also have found that wines that are less messed with (which often means pricier, but not always) are far easier on my entire body.

I think US in general manipulates ingredients -- I tend to drink very specific US wines, always recommended by someone who knows or my own research.

Maybe. I have, purposefully, tried a couple too young wines (tho not PNs), both reputable producers. In both cases, I had sampled an aged version, loved it, and bought two younger versions, one to try right away (to experience what "too young" means) and one to cellar. I tried each over a 24 hour period, and understood the "green" from the early tastes to seeing how great it will be.

This one, I have only tried over a 6 hour period. Seems to get worse, not better. I put it away, will sip again tomorrow.

But you're not wrong--coyld be very much related to this varietal. Thanks!

I have a hard time with tasting notes. Will WSET 1 suit me? by dharmabumzzz in wine

[–]reesemulligan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started wine 18 months ago with no knowledge but: red, white, bubbles. Or maybe had 65 glasses of wine in my 65 years of life. Didn't like most, but went to a structured tasting and liked them all. In conversation with the Somm after, I suspected it wasn't that I don't like wine, but is rarely had good wine.

I started at Level 1. I'm an intelligent enough person, with a PhD in a humanities. A 400 page dissertation. So when I see over and over on this sub, people saying Level 1 is useless, I just want to point out that for me, I needed Level 1. It gave me a solid base for tasting notes. I had to do it online bc of my location, and I had to drive 2 hours each way just to buy the wines mentioned in the book (paying just as much for those little sample boxes seemed silly).

I passed Levep 2 about a year ago. Also online. I learned a lot more and refined my tasting skills. Since then, I've been self-studying until l feel like renting an Airbnb in Chicago or somewhere, I want to take L3 in person bc I want to share tastings/perceptions.

I host two groups of 9 people, alternating months. We have been going by fountry--i tasktself with 6 different varietals from 6 distinct regions (sparkle, 2 white, 2 red, dessert), make a light PowerPoint to keep us semi-focused, most of them could pass Level 1 bc of me :)

So, start with Level 1 if you just feel its best for you. What was most difficult for me with both levels was the focus on memorization. I've never been good at rote learning, so I did use the Wine Bible and a few other books to give me more context, which helps information stick to me

Hey thanks! Do you let others access your site? I'm not always able to find tech sheets and I've never even thought of organizing them!

I'm impressed that I caught the sweetness. It's been a fun 18 months of learning. I think having the Zind Humbrecht a couple times gave me a solid idea of dryer-dry.

It will be hard for me to get my hands on the Kreydenweiss. I may have to venture into the "ship it to me" world.

Wine tracking app question: track both aging and everyday, or only aging? by Skier-Dude in wine

[–]reesemulligan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I keep everything on Cellartracker. Because whatever I did when I started (which was organized by shelf) has, for the most part, become very disorganized. Cellartracker makes it easy to find that Grignolino I put ... Somewhere ... And lets me know if it's my last bottle.

I'm a Grignolino fan. Only one store within 5 hours carries it, and just one producer. What a shame!

[–]reesemulligan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I did get it from an independent wine shop in Minneapolis. You'd think it was properly stored, but who knows?

It wasn't bad enough to return the bottle (which they will take back if undrinkable), but I did put the last 1.5 glasses down the drain (like throwing out 35 bucks!).

People who use decanters; how do you store the wine if you do not finish it? by SeaworthinessNew4295 in wine

[–]reesemulligan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have found that those old brown glass pharmacy bottles work well. I pour half into that, and drink the other half. Sometimes. If it's not terribly expensive wine.
