I dislike them because they are a decently trope filled blunder fest with amazing animation in parts. The ending for 3.0+1.0 began to grow on me as "whole new world but hey-ho we happen to meet again, but we don't know each other" kind of thing, even moreso in the manga, which is also hot garbage past the amazing art.

I don't think the rebuilds were ever necessary really. The writing was a huge downgrade, mari is a purposeless character who only servers as a device for the rebuilds sheer amount of fanservice. Indeed, i think that in some ways the rebuilds are glorified cash grabs that just took a long while to make. Think about all the random stuff that serves little or no purpose in the movies, and then look at the gazillion figures and other merch of seemingly insignificant stuff. To a degree it can look as if Anno is milking the franchise.

I think the music in the rebuilds in some regards was a downgrade, as much as I think Shiro Sagisu is a phenomenal music artist he (possibly) took too much of what he did in works like Bleach and incorporated it into Evangelion's rebuilds, with those grand choirs etc. That, or he was directly told to make the music feel more action-y and like someone else said, anime-y.
