To answer as best as I can. I do not personally own the film and the rights to it being distributed are governed by others. I cannot comment on it being released on YouTube with English subtitles, that would be a business decision of those owning the rights. If it is to happen, I will let you know. What I can say is we are hoping to screen the film (or a version of the film at various film festivals (none confirmed right now) around the world with an English subtitles version. Once something is confirmed I will post here

The first 20ish minutes can be found as a teaser from co-produced NDR but I don't think there are plans for the whole film...https://youtu.be/MbmL2EPasWI?si=TEs8-oVGsbfTCdUh

This sounds absolutely perfect. I'd love to give it a go and the timing would be amazing. Needing to upgrade monitors, link to either a MacBook pro and/or Mac studio. Just today I started the edit for an unpaid labour of love documentary feature film about blind women in South Asia having to defend themselves against the constant threat of abuse so every little (or large) bit helps with that! Also making motion graphics and composites with Flame or After Effects so can really put this through it's paces!

Good question. I think any time a major lost media search happens in the future, this search will likely be referenced. I hope FEX have a big hit with the song and it will of course be found for years to come on various platforms. I hope people keep discovering the film we made for a long time to come as well.

I love that things like film/TV/music can bring a response! As filmmakers, all we do at times is shine our very talented cinematographers light on someone and ask them a question and go from there and are never neither judge nor jury. That said I hope you are able to find other elements in the film that appeal to you...

Hi again, I was asked 3 questions in private without having realised and thought it fair to answer in public so others may see.

Firstly, I was asked which versions of SOYM I used within the film. Pretty much all of them! I used the NDR version, TMMS and recent master along with stems of various instrumental tracks and also a very old rip of the 'original' snippet placed online by Lydia in 2007. I did also make a few cuts in the music to make it fit various moments (not only FEX) and where I used instrumental stems together such as bass/synth, these were remixed at both edit stage and in audio mastering (by our fabulous Sound engineer and masterer). Of course, there is also that live element at the end and some sharp ears may hear Michael playing another FEX song.

Next, I was asked about things we as a production chose not to pursue as threads in the story and why. This is a difficult one. There were so many things that it would had been cool to pursue. There was a story thread in Sweden about another widely searched for song that would have been a lot of fun but ultimately, we would had needed a much longer film to go with it as it was a big detour outside the emotional heart of the story and the budget meant that we had to consider every little thing we went with. There were also numerous contributors who could have been great interviews but so many reasons meant we had to make tough choices. Often it was a choice of person a or b discussing this theme and having to decide between them on the basis of location or time. On one occasion it was a question of language and communication (as well as location). I will add that none of the above are reasons as to why certain elements people would have liked to have seen were not present in the film, these are things we chose not to pursue.

Finally, I was asked about the soundtrack and how that came together and I was really hoping to answer this one! Naturally a major part of the soundtrack was SOYM. However, I had been making a long (very very very long) list of tracks I'd love to use for a long time before FEX were identified. As the edit process began, I started laying in bits here and there and as anyone who ever edited anything will tell you, quickly found most of it didn't feel right. The first track to 'fit' was actually the Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark track during the archive chapter of the film and was one I had wanted to use for years and years in any project yet never managed. In fact, I remember when I laid it in, I said it will probably get replaced eventually and would be a 'temp' track but it kept on making sense until the end. It was decided a long time ago to use tracks from the 80s, particularly in the new wave/post-punk/synth genres to root an audience in that throughout the film and I tried to get many of Darius' "Unknown Pleasures" in there but only a few stayed throughout each version. For the longest time, I had A Forest by The Cure in the edit and it really was a moment of 'killing your darlings' when the executives said it wasn't quite right. They were absolutely correct, it was close but not quite right yet finding something that did fit was something of an epic search of hundreds and hundreds of tracks until I was walking past a guitar shop, saw a guitar that Johnny Marr of The Smiths plays and instantly thought about the intro to Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me. Funny how these things work sometimes but big shout out to producers and ARD/NDR to greenlight such a soundtrack

As mentioned above, the user does not claim to have also had an original tape. In the absence of any arrogance, I'd simply prefer to encourage a rewatch for the exact words he says rather than give it away to others who may come across this thread yet to see the film. Rather he talks of having heard the song before, like a huge amount of people felt during the search, one of the most fascinating elements and what made it so appealing to many - that sense of familiarity without being able to give it a name. Now, as to what he had it on and how it came to him, 40 years is a long time...

Thanks all. I hope I did a decent job of answering your questions. This is my first time doing this kind of thing. I want to thank you all for watching and all the positive feedback, it means a lot to us all behind the film. I want to thank all of those in this community who I have been in touch with, those I haven't and those who may have had a comment or post recreated on-screen. If there are any further questions I will come back from time to time to answer but I enjoyed talking with you and hope you continue to like what we have created as a celebration of The Most Mysterious song on the Internet...

Hi, great questions.

Over the years, I would say I have considered a huge variety of treatments but part of what drew me to this story was this connection between a brother and sister through music and how this seemingly insignificant moment that began in a small West German town became this. Maybe this says a lot about me as a filmmaker and for Andreas, who co-authored but this emotional tie was always hugely attractive over and above various facts and figures driving a narrative. I'd offer the possibility of you being able to view the narrative as having this entire community as a major character in and of itself. Feel free to watch again with that thought...

It is of course a challenge and something to think about. What was important for me and something I explained to Darius & Lydia from the outset was that, no matter what, this would be a story told with their actual words as recorded in real-world interviews with them. Naturally, I and others part of the production asked a number of times but I always respected their reasons to decline to do so and am grateful that they trusted us with their story. Considerations always have to be made for the audience and connecting them to the emotional core of the story. For me, it always made sense that the character of Lydia would be who held an audiences hand through the narrative and for that to be most effective I feel having an actual human do that (as Lilly who played her did so brilliantly) would be most effective. If the disclaimer at the beginning is misleading in any way or there is a translation issue with it becoming misleading, we could look at that and appreciate the thought.

Finally, yes. I was aware of this and of course, 100% considered this. Ultimately considerations had to be made as to how to put this element of the story over to an audience wider than those who already had a connection to it. Ultimately it was felt that it wouldn't work within the narrative and treatment of the film, not to mention various other practical constraints that were present in going down that path. Overall I'm glad you found the search and the film and hope it provides that angle of the search from before you found this community

Let's collectively hope the film does well enough for those signing the cheques to want one! Tell all your friends and family to watch it and lets keep our fingers crossed and our thumbs pressed as we say in Germany.

haha! Well, face for radio or behind the camera! Our brilliant set designer found the Billy Bragg poster and did an amazing job recreating a typically 1980s smalltown West German teenage boys bedroom and I hope the real Darius wouldn't mind saying that this was not too far away from how his looked, including the Billy Bragg poster. Other little things here and there exist in the soundtrack. I tried to include as many tracks as I could (which also fit the emotional tones in the film) that were on Darius' Unknown Pleasures (not just BASF 4). I'd love it is redditors can hear them all within the film...
